(m1rn~ The quote you refer to was made by Clark Collins, executive director of the Blueribbon Coalition. We feel his expressed opinion is closer to being the truth thtut it is to being irresponsible. Do you honestly think that we"re all so naive that we aren't aware of the fact that many elected officials have been unresponsive to our needs in the past? But you're right, they're the only votes we Californians have in the U.S. Senate. Until the next election...Editor. My earliest racing memories, fIrst as a rider, and then as a tuner/sponsor, include Jimmy and the ever-present Reno. The first vintage road races, held at Bridgehampton, New York, were a Jimmy Adamo-Dave Roper duel. When Battle of the Twins appeared in 1981, Jimmy and Reno were there. And they went on to win more twin~ylinderraces than anyone else. Period. Jimmy matured, opened a business, married, had children, and mellowed in semi-retirement. But the racer's urgE: could not be denied. He will be missed. Rob Iannucci Team Obsolete Brooklyn, NY Guys could use a laugh After reading (Voices, March 3 issue) how the creator of Team Smitty is having trouble finding time to draw, I would like to suggest a solution. Would it be possible to reprint previous Team Smitty strips? My friends and I would like to see the one where Smitty calls a cycle repair shop and has the service manager repair his bike over the phone. The guys could use a laugh. W'BPA ~~~~noN Jimmy Adamo died on Sunday, March 7, while competing in the Daytona 200. Scenes in the Daytona pits as the news spread: Armen Armerian, crying uncontrollably; Kurt Liebmann, sitting on a stool in his garage after the race with his head between his knees, his hands tied in reddened knots; Reno Leoni, leaning against the garage wall whispering, "Jimmy is gone, he is It's Saturday and I'm doing some packing for Daytona. I'm leaving Monday, March 1, so I don't expect to see the latest issue of Cycle News. I'll be gone when it arrives. There's the post man. Wait, what's that he's putting in my mail box? Godspeed, Jimmy We aim to please Marketing &. Promotion MarkThome, Mallager SeNice and Support Chris Ai/cheson, HeadquJJrters Receptianist Leonard Herring. Service and Support It is indeed true that the fat lady hasn't yet sung on this matter, and it is therefore irresponsible for anyone to suggest that an elected official in the U.S. Senate will be unresponsive to our concerns. We at AMA have met with both staff members from Sen. Boxer's and Sen. Feinstein's Washington, D.C., offices. We will continue to work with them toward the goal of exempting from wilderness and park designation the traditional and long travelled OHV routes, trails and recreation corridors in the California Desert Conservation Area. In the meantime, we hope our members and allies will write to both senators (and others on the Sena te Energy and Natural Resources Committee) to rationally explain the legitimate concerns we have with this bill. Please be firm, but courteous, in all correspondence. Remember, until the next election, they have all the votes. Jim Bensberg AMA Washington, D.C. CD/endar Eduor A recent item in In The Wind (February 24 issue) encourages OHV enthusiasts to write California Senators Feinstein and Boxer regarding the 1993 version of the California Desert Protection Act (521), but says that Sen. Boxer "isn't likely to hands in four days. That's admirable an what we hope to get for the money we pa them. But we'd lave to see that happen times a year for em:h and every one of ou readers in the U.S. In other words, we'd I to see every subscriber receive that week' issue no 1ater than Saturday. Yet we contin ually hear of copies that took a week an even longer to reach subscribers. Neit rain, nor sleet, nor...yeah, yeah, yeah. Bu we're sure many will agree that a comp that had the marketing sense to produce an Elvis Presley stamp or got Dave Kimmey his Daytona preview issue in four days can't be all bad. .. Editor.
