Scott Goggles field rep Bevo Forti suffered five broken ribs in a crash in the March 3 Alligator Dual Sport Ride at Daytona. "I was trying to keep up with Ty Davis and Larry Roeseler," said Forti. "I guess I'll just be moving real slow for a few days:' Sunstar Sprockets will be the official sponsor of the upcoming 8th Annual CMC Spring Classic Nationals and will put two college scholarships up for grabs. To be eligible for the scholarships, you must be an amateur· MXer and register with Sunstar prior to participating in the Spring Classic Nationals. The Western States Racing Association has announced that the 23rd Annual Virginia City Grand Prix will take place in Virginia City, Nevada, on May 8-9. That's Mother's Day weekend and if you are still wondering what to give Mom on "her" day, Papa suggests you pay her entry fee! Are you hoping to qualify for the 1993 ISDE which will take place in Holland or the '94 ISDE which will be held in Oklahoma? If you are, perhaps you shoUld plan on attending the two-day ISDE training camp that will be held on March 27-28 at Jellico Creek ORV Park in Winfield, Tennessee. Eight-time ISDE gold medalist Dick Burleson and Alan Randt, the team manager of the winning 1991 U.S. Junior World squad, will be the instructors. All aspects of ISDE competition and the American ISDE qualifying events will be covered, including the selection process, format, scoring, special tests, trail riding, tire changing, bike preparation and riding technique. If you're interested in seeing how you and your bike can perform on a road race track but have been put off by the cost and tech requirements of sanctioned events, you might be interested in checking out the track practice days being hosted by the Southeastern Sportbike Association (SSA). The SSA holds track practice events for both street and race classes and they say the sessions are "an attractive means for beginning riders to safely explore their riding abilities:' The next SSA track practice day is scheduled for Sunday, April 4, at Alabama's Talladega Gran Prix Raceway. For the fourth consecutive year, American Suzuki will be the major sponsor of the May 1-2 AMA National Championship 125/250cc MX Series round at Motocross 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts. Participating Suzuki dealers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire will be offering $5 discount coupons (valid for advance sale weekend tickets only). A.dditionally, Suzuki has been designated the name sponsor of the April 24-25 NESC Open Invitational MX Weekend at Motocross 338. The AHRMA MX that was rained out on February 22 at Sandhill Ranch in Brentwood, California, has been rescheduled. It will take place at Sandhill on April 4. It appears that rumOr has an AHRMA MX taking place that day at Brentwood, but it's just that a rumor. According to Dick Mann, who was named AHRMA Sportsman of the Year at the AHRMA awards banquet that took place during Daytona Cycle Week, a late addition to the AHRMA Vintage Iron National MX Series is an April 18 Hap Jones-sponsored round at Sandhill. Former Triumph factory race team mechanic Pat Owens is seeking reelection to the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees. Owens, who was elected to the board in 1989, faces some tough opposition this year in the April 20 election. "In order to raise money for my campaign, I am having a drawing for three motorhome-eompati_ble dual sport bikes ('87 Yamaha TW200, '78 Yamaha IT175 and '80 Honda XL1oo) that I own," Owens said. "The drawing also includes an invitation to a three-day camp-out at Red Mountain in southern California over Memorial Day weekend. Owens says that he is sure that if he is not reelected and one of the two attorneys who are running for his seat take his place on the board, the board won't be as supportive of continuing the community college motorcycle repair program or other programs in the automotive technology field. American Honda and participating Honda dealers will host the 7th Annual Honda Fun Day/Big Bucks MX on April 24-25 at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. Among the highlights will be on and off-road demo rides on '93 Hondas, a charity cookout, judged bike show, auto drag racing, and a trials demonstration by five-time National Champion Ryan Young. The Motorcycle Heritage Museum, located at the headquarters of the AMA in Westerville, Ohio, has begun regular weekend hours. Through October, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Regular weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and there is never an admission fee. The museum will be closed Easter Sunday, April 11, but will be open on Memorial Day, Independence Day (Fourth of July) and Labor Day. Current featured exhibits include "My First Bike," a retrospective of some of the most popular motorcycles used by first-time riders over the years, and "World Class Americans," which documents the successes of American motorcycle racers in World Championship competition from 1937 to the present. A new exhibit, "Ninety Years of Harley-Davidson," which honors the American motorcycle manufacturer's upcoming anniversary, will open in June. The 2nd Annual Vintage Motorcycle Days, a celebration of the rich history of motorcycling in America, will be held July 24-25. Last year's inaugural Vintage Motorcycle Days, held in the AMA headquarters and the adjacent Motorcycle Heritage Museum in Westerville, Ohio, attracted more than 6000 enthusiasts. Projections of an even bigger turnout this year have prompted AMA officials to move the event to Murphy's Part Bam and Powell Motor Speedway, a recreation spot with more than 100 acres of tree-shaded countryside about 10 miles northwest of AMA headquarters. Jerry Wood will again conduct an antique, classic and vintage motorcycle auction with a portion of the proceeds again donated to the Motorcycle Heritage Museum. In addition, the weekend wiII also feature a motorcycle memorabilia auction, judged bike show, antique motorcycle swap meet, trials riding demonstrations, and a large vendor show. The weekend's events actually get under way on Friday evening, July 23, with an AMA Member Dinner to honor AMA Life Members at Murphy'S. Former AMA 250cc National Champion road racer Dave Emde tells Papa that he's now working for the Jim Russell Racing School at Laguna Seca International Raceway. In addition to working at the auto racing school, Emde teaches motorcycle racing technique at the Dennis Pegelow Riding School, which is also based at Laguna Seca. Emde says working for Jim Russell at Laguna Seca is "a wish come true:' The second round of the Dealer MX Series that was scheduled to take place at southern California's Glen Helen OHV Park on Sunday, April 11, has been rescheduled. In order to give the Easter Bunny some space, the event has been moved to April 4. Steve Monger, an ex-pro flat track racer, has reopened Tulare Cycle Park in Tulare, California, with the help of his wife, his father Joe, and other motorcycle enthusiasts. The facility will be open for practice the first and third Saturday of March and April with racing being scheduled soon. For more information, call 805/832-1955. Scott Summers, two-time National Hare Scrambles Champion and three-time Grand National Cross Country Champion, recently had his post office box in Petersburg, Kentucky, broken in to. According to his mechanic Fred Bramblett, Sports Illustrated for Kids ran feature story on Scott in their March issue with the post office box number listed so that readers could write for more information on Summers, or to send membership fees to join the Summers Racing Club. About 20 letters were opened by thieves in hopes of finding money. Bramblett requests that anyone who recently wrote to Summers or mailed a check to the club, please write in again and explain. "We need the copies of any returned checks for the postmaster's investigation and report, said Bramblett." Letters should be sent to the Summers Racing Club, P.O. Box 92, Petersburg, KY 41080. Charlie Venegas, who won the Tucson and Phoenix rounds of the I.eE. Triple Crown of Speedway Ice Racing last month, will be shooting for the special prize of $10,000 when he competes in the Mello Yellow World Ice Speedway Championship on Sunday, March 14, in Anchorage, Alaska's Sullivan Arena. Special Risks Insurances of Belgium posted the award which is offered to any rider who can win all three rounds of the ice race series. As winner of the first two races, Venegas is the only rider with a shot at the big prize. The night before the Anchorage Triple Crown race, the speedway competitors will be doing their thing in the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. Moto America, the North American importer and distributor for Moto Guzzi, will hold its 3rd Annual National Open House on Sunday, April 25, at Midway Cycles in Lillington, North Carolina. It will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and, like in years past, will feature a full day of activities, highlighted by a raffle for a new Moto Guzzi. The complete 1993 Moto Guzzi line, including the new Iimi ted oed ition Daytona 1000, will be on display and demo rides will be available to anyone who calls ahead and reserves a ride. There will be free food and drinks, a poker run, a judged bike show, swap meet, and door prizes. Lillington is located approximately 45 minutes southeast of RaleighDurham. "It's an old injury that [ aggravated during the week," said Swink. "I landed real hard off a jump and jammed it. I've had it hooked up to an electronic stimulator and it feels okay. After this we have a few weeks off, so it should heal up:' Swink went on to finish ftfth. The rock band ZZ Top will be the featured concert headliner at the June 12 Harley-Davidson 90th Anniversary Reunion in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The concert will be held in the Marcus Ampitheater, located on the grounds of the Henry W. Maier Festival Park. The 90th Birthday Celebration will take place during the show, and will be hosted by a "surprise" guest. Proceeds from the reunion's $25 ticket fee will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
