eLOCAL EVENTS' e Mark Barnett autographed th~ gas tank of Lisa Powell's 1973 Yamaha 250MX after borrowing the bike to win the Master's class at the Orlando Vintage Motocross. Todd Hoy raced to an eighth overall finish at the Barbenders Hare Scrambles. the holeshot, followed closely by Barnett and Garlin. A bobble by Barnett in turn two allowed Garlin to sneak by on the inside to claim second. Both Garlin and Barnell then passed Burrows on the first set of double jumps, '!Vith Garlin fighting gamely to maintain his slight lead. Barnett soon gut by Garlin in the back sand section, only to lose his lead by falling before the start-finish tabletop. Garlin's moment of glory was short-lived, however, as Barnett regained the lead for good on lap two and was neve.r again challenged. Garlin finished a respectable second ahead of Burrows. Pentonmounted AI Gardner and Villacaro rounded out the top four. First-moto Sportsman division action saw Dorsey Bennett on an Ossa Phantom claim the holeshot, followed closely by Montesa VRmounted Eric Kraft and the Honda Elsinore 250cc of Steve Binegar. Binegar slipped to fifth during lap one after being passed by Usa Powell and Yamaha·mounted Jimmy Harner. Meanwhile, a slight miscue by Bennett on lap three allowed Kraft 10 gain the lead and go on to win the moto. Binegar worked his way back up to third, and Powell finished a fine fourth as her little 125cc Honda Elsinore screamed its way through the deep sand. Moto two was a repeat of the first moto, with the exception of Binegar, whose temperamental Honda refused to start in time for the drop of the gate. Bennett's second holeshot of the day allowed him to cross the green nag with a slight edge over Kraft, who passed Bennett in the air on the first set of double jumps, only to be repassed by Bennett at the next comer. After trading the point position back and forth several limes, Kraft finally was able to regain the lead on lap two and go on to win the moto, followed by Bennett, Suzuki-mounted Steve Neu and Powell In the highly competitive "Super Vintage" (Bomber) class, Maieo-mounted Dorsey Bennett led the field past the green flag. followed closely by Husqvarna-mounted Bill Burton, Russ McAlister and jimmy Hamer. Following a dismal start, Maieo-mounted Kim Burrows charged his way through the pack to gain the lead for good by the end of the first lap. Bennett and Burton had a real battle going for second, with Burton finally prevailing on the last lap. Molo two saw Burrows lead from flag to flag ahead of Peter Villacaro. Results 12>200: 1. Barnett bombs Orlando Vrntage Motocross By Eric Kraft ORLANDO, FL, FEB. 1 Former Pro motocrosser Mark "The Bomber" Barnett made a guest appearance at round two of the Vintage Iron Florida MX Series at Orlando Motocross Park, riding Lisa Powell's .1973 Yamaha 250 MX to the win in the Masters class. Perfect weather and great track conditions greeted a fuJI field of Vintage and Super Vintage competitors for the competition. Though Barnett's borrowed Yamaha could not be described as the most pristine of vintage mounts, he nonetheless grabbed the holeshol in mota one and roosted away from the rest of the field to take the win, lapping all but seven of the 16 riders in the process! Honda Elsinoremounted Ed Garlin was second, followed by Kim Burrows on one of his beautifully restored Makos. Peter Villacaro was fourth on a CZ.
