Injured in Iihe fall, Mclaughlin was out for one lap before getting back on his bike and finishing Iihe moto. When Iihe second moto started, Barnes again took the lead with Mclaughlin right on him. Unable to get by, Mclaughlin had to settle for a rare second place. The 12Sec Novice class proved to be an exciting event wilih jason Terry taking the lead out of the gate. Chris Brittain passed three riders to move into second place. The first four riders were going hard and close, but Iihere was no change in position for four laps. On the fifth lap, Monty Meadlock passed John Paul West and Terry to lake the lead, and Jeff jackson came up to lake third place. Terry took Iihe moto-two holeshot. followed by West and Meadlock. Results Harold hauls at Cow Palace Amateur Arenacross By Bill Spencer DALY mY, CA, JAN. 10 Oklahoman Robbie Reynard swept both 12Xc main events in the Lazy E Arena. AMA National Arenacross Series: Round 3 Reynard, Hawthorne share Lazy Eglory By Kat Spann GUTHRIE, OK, JAN. 22-23 he kid and the veteran shared the spotlight at the Lazy E Arena, as 15year-old Robbie Reynard and 29year-old Dennis Hawthorne captured the wins in the 125 and 250cc main events, respectively, on both nights of racing of the National Arenacross doubleheader in Guthrie. Over 12,000 spectators showed up for the Rad & Badsponsored events. Hawthorne grabbed the holeshot in Friday night's 125cc main and led Ben Heibel, Billy Whitley and Jason Upshaw through tum one. Reynard was mired at the start and quickly began to race towards the front of the pack. Heibel and Hawthorne swapped the lead a few times, but all eyes were on Reynard, who had raced past Upshaw and Whitley to take over third by the third lap. Reynard made quick work of Heibel and set out after Hawthorne, who enjoyeq a slim lead. Reynard quickly reeled in the leader and the two riders engaged in a heated dice that lasted two laps before Reynard took over for good. Once into the lead, Reynard pulled away and won by nearly 10 seconds. Hawthorne was second, ahead of Jason Edwards. "I didn't get a good start, but once I got into the race I rode as best I could," said Kawasaki Team Green/Fox/CTi/ Bell-sponsored Reynard. "But my shoulder kept popping out and I hurt my thumb in practice." In the 250cc main, Reynard grabbed the holeshot ahead of Hawthorne and Upshaw and easily outdistanced the rest of the field. At the halfway point of the 2Q-lap main with nearly a half of a lap lead, Reynard lost his timing in a whoop section and went down and then dropped out of the race, having further aggravated a shoulder injury that he T 26 sustained in practice earlier in the evening. Hawthorne went on to notch the win aboard his Kawasaki Team Green/ LCS/Sammy White's Kawasaki/Shoeibacked machine. Upshaw finished second and Terry Tinney was third. Hawthorne led the way at the start of Saturday night's 125cc main, but had Reynard and Upshaw hot on his rear fender. Upshaw passed Reynard on the opening lap, but Reynard retaliated quickly and then also went on to pass Hawthorne for the lead. Reynard and Hawthorne pulled away from the pack as they engaged in a cat fight, but on lap six Reynard broke away for good and went on to take the checkered flag 15 seconds ahead of Hawthorne, with Upshaw taking third. Billy Whitley was the fastest off the line in the 250cc main, and enjoyed the lead for five laps before both Hawthorne and Reynard forced their way past. Reynard dogged Hawthorne for the lead during laps five through 11, but got sideways in the whoops on the 12th circuit and flew off the track. Reynard waited for several riders to pass before re-entering the track, bu t was forced to stop yet again when his upper body became entangled in track banners. Once underway, Reynard set a blistering pace and repassed all but Hawthorne. With two laps to go, Reynard reeled in the leader and found his way past Hawthorne just before they navigated a large triple jump. Reynard's hometown crowd went nuts as he sailed over the finish line jump in first place. Hawthorne crossed the finish line second, with Whitley and Tinney third and fourth, respectively. "1 got crossed up at the start of the bumps and let several riders get past before I got back on the track," said Reynard. "Then I got the banners caught on me and had to stop again. I had to ride really hard to catch back up to Dennis." After the race, several riders protested Reynard for not re-entering the track at the exact spot that he had left it. Reynard was docked a position, and Hawthorne was declared the winner. CN After topping the exposition 50cc class on both nights of Pro competition at the Cow Palace Arenacross, young Robbie Harold finished off his weekend with a win in Iihe Pee Wee Modified division in Sunday's amateur competition. The racing action, which was a part of the Mike IGdd Budweiser National Arenacross Series, was held in conjunction wilih Iihe International Motorcycle Expo, and drew nearly 300 amateur riders for a full aftemoon of competition. The Edge Racing/O'Neal-sponsored Harold was popular with the audience as he rode to the win in the main event Anthony Houser was second, and Josh Guzman was impressive in the third spo\. Kevin GonzaeJez topped the 80cc Beginner (12-15) class main event, but only after Robbie Simpson bailed off on the final lap. The two Kawasaki pilots put on a good show, but it was Neil Wright in for Iihe second-place trophy and Jeff Brochard claiming third. Louie Lopez had the fans on their feel in the l25cc D main, as he was flying high over Iihe Bud Peaks jump, but it was Brian jenkin wilih the win. Lopez' Husqvarna came across the line in second place and Mike Pitrola was third. Former mini ace Saul Smoak took top honors in Iihe U5ee C main over Nat Woods and Cr~ig Humphrey, while Marcus Charles won Iihe 125ee B division ahead of Jimmy Pierce and Mark )(Jauser. Charles looked to be Iihe top man in Iihe 250cc B main event as weU, but Danny Kritzer, in his first ride in the B class, made all the right moves to get by for the win. Charles was second over Marcus Sabado. Kevin won Iihe large 250cc D class ahead of Rich Clark and Shawn Delong while Sam Love was best in the 2SOcc C main. Results P/W: 1. Robbie Harokt (Yam); 2. Graves groovy at Willow RR By Eric Vincent ROSAMOND,CA.JAN.I6-17 Chuck Graves didn't let a little rain stop him from winning the Toyota/Dunlop/Del Amo Motors/Budweiser Formula One Grand Prix race during the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club's season opener at Willow Springs International Raceway. HI love racing in the rain, said Graves after taking the checkered flag in a heavy downpour, an unusual weather situation for the Mojave Desert racetrack. It took Graves only one lap to position his ValvoJine/Suzuki-sponsored Suzuki GSXR750 into the lead, then he never looked back. Brian Bernard held the initial lead off the line. but going lIhrough tum two in Iihe fltSt lap, Paul Harrell, riding his Attack Racing-sponsored Suzuki GSXRll00, edged past Bernard to take over the top spot. Bernard was quickly passed again, this lime by a charging Graves. Defending Formula One class champion Robert Majer seemed to be suffering in Iihe rain as he was running in sixlih place during Iihe initial laps, but he began slowly moving up on the leaders. On the second lap. as the top two riders rounded turn four, Graves moved around Harrell and took over Iihe lead. Riding in third was jim VanVegten on his Risky Business Racing-sponsored Yamaha FZRl000. As the race drew to a dose, there was no change in Iihe top three. However, Robert Miller was making his move lIhrough the pack, passing Bernard in the final lap to leave himsell with a fourth-place finish behind Graves, Harrell and VanVegten. "I wasn't too excited about riding in Iihe rain because of previous experiences, but once I got out there I was having a great time," said Harrell after the race. The Maxima Racing Oil Formula Two event was also run in the midst of a heavy rain shower, and was thus shortened to six laps. Nick lenatsch jumped off Iihe line and led the pack into the first turn on his Del Arno Motorsbacked Yamaha TZ250. Following lenatsch off the line was Mike Riley and Andy Milton, both aboard Dunlop-shod Honda CBR600F2 machines. By the end of Iihe first lap. Milton had moved up on Riley, and passed him going into tum eight. He then set his sights on Ienalsch, and a lap later, moved inside of lenatsch going lIhrough tum two, giving Milton the race lead.
