explained Curry. "Everyone else was
riding the smoother, wider lines."
Neese holeshot the second moto, but
Dengler ripped past on the opening lap.
Ferry, Yoho, Sheak and Barton gave
chase, while Curry again struggled
through the pack with a 15th-placE! start.
Curry set a methodical pace and
picked off his competitors one byone.
"I took my time," said Curry. "I had
confidence that I could win."
Slowly but surely, Curry wove
through the field and into the lead by
the ninth lap. Chasing Curry were
Ferry, Sheak and Barton, and it was
Barton who came alive at the moto's
end. Bartvn zipped past Sheak and
Ferry, and flew across the finish line in a
near photo-finish with winner Curry. .
"I closed on the last lap and pulled
alongside Curry," said Barton. "We
were bouncing sideways in the last
whoop section, but he just held on for
the win."
Ferry met disaster on the final lap
and dropped out of contention, while
Canadian Carl Vaillancourt, 12th in the
first moto, surprised Sheak with a lastlap pass for third.
Curry's 1-1 was uncontested for the
overall win, while Sheak's 3-4 edged
Treadwell's 2-6 for the runner-up position. Barton was fourth overall with a 92.
Vince DeVane holeshot the opening
250cc Pro moto ahead of Plotts and
Ferry, but it didn't take long for Ferry to
blast into the read. Treadwell worked
into second, just ahead of Andrews and
Barton, and the finishing order was set.
"I had a pretty big lead, but at the
halfway point I noticed that Treadwell
was closing in," said Ferry. "I let him
close to five seconds before I got back on
the gas."
"I was gaining on Treadwell,"
claimed Andrews. "But I was getting
tired so I just settled for third. Yamaha
pays fOr overall finishes, not moto
scores."
"I just tried to ride consistently and
pick off a guy or two every lap," said
Barton, who worked up to fourth after a
mid-pack start.
Frenchman Gerome Belvol stole the
start in the second moto, but had
Andrews, Jeff Frisz, Ferry and Barton
hot on his heels.
Bevol, the second-ranked National
French rider, said, "I came to America to
practice. I ride pretty good at the start of
the race, but then my arms get tired."
Andrews took over the lead on lap
two and fended off the charges of Ferry
and Treadwell.
"I used a hare scrambles trick. Let
them close in, then trash their goggles in
a mudhole," said Andrews.
Andrews eventually tired and
allowed both Barton and McElroy past,
but held on to third until the finish.
Barton pulled out a comfortable lead at
the finish and earned the overall win
with his 4-1 performances, barely edging out Andrews' 3-3. Treadwell was
third overall with his 2-6.

"There was a lot of water in the inside
lines and my bike kept cutting out."
Ross Pederson and Alan Andreu
waged a classic war in the Vet Pro class.
In the early stages of moto one, Andreu
led Gary Semics, Ricky Palmer and
Pederson, but Pederson quickly slithered through the pack and into the lead.
"I had a lead going, but Pederson
was closing in fast. I knew that the moto
was too short to wear him down, so I
figured I'd let him go and wait for moto
two," said AndreJ!:
Kevin Windham (511) battled with Robbie Skaggs (44) throughout the weekend. Windham won two classes, Horton won one.
Pederson notched the win over
Andreu, Kevin Knight and Grahn.
In moto two, Pederson again roosted
away with the win, while Andreu settled into a comfortable second..
"I almost went over the bars! It took
all of my gumption and I had to let him
go again," said Andreu.
Grahn, Knight and Palmer rounded
out the top five overall finishers.
