Bauerle. Butzier, though, was stuck in sixth behind Zwerican. Try as he might, Butzier couldn't find a way past. One lap from the finish, Keener tried to wedge his way inside Crawford as they went into tum three. The two rid~ ers collided, and both lost traction on the ice and went down. As they scrambled to pick up their downed machines, Bauerle and Piekos slid past and into the top two spots. In the confusion, Bauerle lost his concentration and slid wide in a turn, leaving the door wide open for Piekos. Piekos dove to the inside line and took over the lead just before the white flag flew, and went on to notch the win with a slim margin over Bauerle. Zwerican and Butzier rounded out the top four finishers. "At first, I was disappointed that I was going to finish fourth," said Cycle Craft Racing/Dave Bird/Kold Kutter/Neil Keen/Don Waldbuesser/ White Bros.-backed Piekos. "Then aU of a sudden guys started falling and I found myself in the lead. I'm ecstatic! I've worked for a number one plate for 18 years now, and I'm not going to give it up easily, that's for sure." A hard-eharging Craig Pickett led the. 500cc A class into the first turn with Tim Farrell in hot pursuit. Though he was pressured heavily by Farrell, Pickett kept his Rotax 600 out in front long enough to claim the win. Farrell finished a close second aboard his HarleyDavidson. And proving that the 4O-andover riders can still mix it up with the youngsterS, Senior class racer Crawford garnered third place aboard a Rotax 600. The 650cc Sidecar class main ·event proved to be one of the day's most exciting races. From start to finish, the team of Robert VanOtteren and' Arnold Lazarowicz did battle with the team of Keith Root and James Murray. Root and Murray finally made their move on the last lap. VanOtteren and Lazarowicz went outside to pass a slower team that they were lapping, and gof into the snowbank just enough to allow Root and Murray to inch their Yamaha YZ49D-powered, rig into the lead. With that, many thought that the race was over, but coming out of turn four the Honda CR500-powered VanOtteren and Lazarowicz team won the drag race to the checkered flag to take the National Championship by a wheel. Brothers Kim and Kriss Lyons made an impressive showing in the Open Sidecar final. The two piloted their Kawasaki KZl000-powered rig out front from f1ag-to-flag to take home their third National Ice Racing Championship. Following them home were Donald Rutledge and Gary Helms, also riding a Kawasaki. Third place went to another Kawasaki-mounted pair of brothers, Eric and Thomas Banbard. Mark Pornranky narrowly missed a National title in the 400cc Solo class. Suffering a poor start, Pomranky steadily moved his KTM 300 through the pack and into second place. But unfortunately for Pomranky, the checkered flag flew just as he moved up to challenge eventual winner Kenneth Brown. "I had a bad start, but moved through the pack pretty good," Pornranky said. "But Brown's Yamaha RZ350 has a little more motor than my bike. If we'd gone another lap or two, I might have been able to catch him." Third place went to defending champ Ed Kischnick, who also rode a KTM300. The Professional Exhibition Race was the highlight of the day's racing, with some of the top pro dirt trackers in the United States taking part. Four-time Grand National Champion Scott Parker and three-time champ Jay Springsteen made an appearance on behalf of Tri- John Dillenburg (98) won the 250cc A Solo class. Jeff Chapko (11) and Mike Solaski (3) gave chase, but to no avail. Yamaha-mounted Kenneth Brown powered to the win in the 400cc Studded Solo class with relative ease. County Harley-Davidson Owners Group, Shiawassee H.O.G. and Gildner's Cycle Shop of West Branch. Lining up against Parker and Springsteen were severallndoor Pro Ice Racing Series competitors, including Chuck Springsteen, Doug O'Boyle, Jack Mayer, Jr. and Craig Pickett. Leading off the line was Jay Springsteen, with the other five riders all within arm's reach of one another. Springsteen led for a lap, but fell victim to a blown transmission on the second go-round. Jay's younger brother, Chuck, took over the lead and repeatedly fend- ed off challenges from Parker, Pickett and O'Boyle. But corning off turn four on the final lap, Parker unleashed the power of his factory Harley-Davidson XR750 and roared past Springsteen to take the win. l:N Results 250 A SOLO: 1.
