As I remember, this is how Jody got "permission" from George to win that race: Nicholas was leading going into the last lap when he fell, giving the lead to Roeder. He remounted and not only caught Roeder but passed just before the fhig for the win. Not bad for a "prissy fiddle player" with about half the experience of Roeder at that time and on a bike with a 15 cubic inch disadvantage. I never forgot that 1963 race at Daytona. I was only an Amateur there for the l00-mile race, so I got to watch the 200. I never saw anyone go as fast as Hammer did as he charged around that race track. It was one of the best races I ever watched. Jay Lawless North Pole, AK Don't move over, get out! To whom it may concern and Alan Jackson of New Port Richey, Florida: As you said in your letter, you attended the Orlando Supercross. The next time you go, take your ears with you and you will learn that I don't announce the races in the stadiums but only do the commen.. tary for ESPN, so you couldn't possibly know what I said until it airs in April. When you're going to make a flippant comment, please know whom you're talking about. Now back to your subject: lappers. Larry Naston, the supercross announcer, said the blue flag means, and I quote, "that there's a supercross going on and you're not in it." I love that saying and agree totally with Larry, but I'm a little colder on the subject. Yet nobody hates a lapper worse than me and they're lucky I don't run the AMA or they would get the black flag instead of a blue one. II on any occasion one gets the blue flag, he is being too young, old, slow, or whatever and should go race somewhere else or quit. I did. Bob Hannah Ketchum, 10 Lighten up! Mr. Jackson refers to Bob "The Hurricane" Hannah as a novice announcer. His proclamation was based on a remark about lappers. I think Hannah's remark was hilarious and with that kind of quick wit, he is obviouslya pro announcer. Chance Edmondson Hemet, CA Pay tribute to women While reading the January 20 issue, I came across a pleasant surprise. There on page 19 was a picture of Robin Gingras as she "tended to Joe William's motorcycle between motos." This is a refreshing change that makes me wonder why there aren't more photos of the women behind the men who race. Perhaps your photographers can take more pictures of the racers' wives and girlfriends and you could publish your favorite from each race. There are many women involved in racing who do their best each week to help their rider perform on race day. ~methingassimp~asmingingwater from the cooler, even though you are only a few feet away, seems to make the day a little easier and not quite so long. Let's pay tribute to these women who tolerate the bad weather, the early morning drives, dirt, dust, and mud that is always a part of our sport. Let's show that we really appreciate them being there for us. The glory of seeing their picture in Cycle News shouldn't be reserved just for the racers.
