Shuggart shit!es at Wilkes County Motocross By Tamara Preshell LENOIR. NC, JAN. 3 John Rudder (13X) led a pack of riders off the Expert-class start. Rain before the event made for nearly dustless conditions. Hamel clobbers competition at Jackrabbits H&H By Ken Harvey Jr. Photos by Carl Ogren RED MOUNTAlN, CA, JAN. 10 ational Hare & Hound Champion Danny Hamel took advantage of dustless conditions to win the Jackrabbits Hare & Hound, which was the first District-37 race of the year. A cold and stormy day looked to be brewing as over 300 riders showed up for the race, and long lines at sign-up caused a delay in the five-row bomb start. Rain started to fall as the Expert wave roosted off the line, and Pro Circuit-backed Dave Ondas flew first to the saddle at the end of the bomb run. Right at his heels was a fleet of riders including Hamel, Derrick Paiement, Ted Hunnicutt, Jimmy Lewis, and Donnie Griewe. Ondas kept on flying up front, but nearly ended his race right in front of Hamel "Dave hit one of the huge whoops wrong and it threw him about 10 feet up in the air," said HameL "He was pointed straight up and down and it scared me so much that 1 slammed on my brakes." Hamel took advantage of the mistake to make a pass for the lead and, as usual, continued on uncontested. Paiement swooped into the second position as the course made a loop through Searles Station Valley and headed towards Charlie's Place. Ondas, Hunnicutt and Lewis were swapping third place until Lewis made a break and set out after Paiement. Griewe got his Husky four-stroke up to speed and followed Lewis through the pack. A short time later both riders bagged Paiement, but Hamel was long gone. Suffering from a poor start was Larry Roeseler. After colliding with another rider right off the start, he began a charge from back around 20th place. Dave Kersting was also having troubles. N 28 After scrambling to find a replacement muffler right before the race, his carburetor top came off at the end of the bomb run. "I had to make some adjustments to the jetting and 1 must have forgotten to tighten the top," said Kersting. Jeff Capt was leading the 12Sec class. Without any close competition from his class, he started working on the larger bikes. "1 passed a bunch of open bikes and then I got to this big gap and everyone was gone," said Capt, referring to the lead pack of riders who had stretched out a sizable lead. Back up front it was still Hamel leading, but as the riders went down a long road into check two, Griewe made his move on Lewis for second place. "1 had it pinned and just held it on through some rollers and 1 think its just hooked up," said Griewe. A short distance behind, Roeseler was quickly catching up to Lewis. The second loop took riders through the sand hills for a quick 18 miles. The only changes in the front-runners happened when Lewis passed Ondas and chased after Griewe. In a technical section, Griewe stalled and allowed Lewis to take back second position. John Braasch was having no problems with the Vet 250cc class and was even running ahead of most of the 250cc Experts. Capt still had a sizable lead in the 12Scc class, but Jason Kawell and Steve Ogren were fighting over second place. Charlie Morris was making up for lost time from a flat tire on loop one, and was trying to catch John Rudder who had a comfortable cushion in second place. As the riders entered the pits for the last time, Hamel was still holding a comfortable margin in first, and Lewis was holding down the second spot. Griewe pitted quickly, though, and got out of the pits in second place. Roost America-backed Griewe turned up the pace as he set out on the third loop, which headed north through Charlie's Place aILd across Navy Road before swinging back to Teagle Wash. The first 28 miles of the 3O-mile loop were high-speed terrain, allowing Griewe to pull a little time on Lewis. In the last two miles, the Jackrabbits threw in a surprise section of tight uphills and downhills, where Lewis turned up the heat in hopes of ca tching Griewe, while Hamel crossed the finish line with the wilL. As Griewe crested the last hill, Lewis had attached himself to his Husky's rear fender. Across the last 200 yards to the finish, Lewis got a wheel length on Griewe, but could not make it through the finish chute. Griewe made it into the chute, taking half of it down with him as MSR/Scotts/Power Barbacked Lewis came in to collect third overall and the 250cc class win. "1 didn't thiILk (Lewis) could catch me," said Griewe at the fmish. "The last time I looked. back he was way back there. I thought we were going to hit someone, coming in here so fast." Hamel's race wasn't as exciting. "The scariest thing today besides Dave's big clicker at the start was sitting at the end of the finish chute and seeing DOILnie and Jimmy come flying at me. I had a smooth ride after I passed Dave. I just roosted." Ondas finished fourth, with Hunnicutt and Roeseler not too far behind. Braasch was sixth overall and first in the Vet 250cc class, and Rudder, Paiement, 12Scc class winner Capt and Billy Fullmer rounded out the top 10. Unofficial Results O/A: 1. Danny Hamel (KoIw); 2.
