Ocal favorite Rick Ryan made good
use of his experience earned while
spending the past few seasons racing
in Europe to win all three Pro classes at
Prairie City OHV Park. Ryan fought off
the challenges of a star-studded field in
both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, while
going virtually untouched in the 500cc Pro
division.
On a track that had been battered for a
week by torrential rains, the Yamaha rider
from San Jose showed everyone that he
could handle the elements as well as the
competition. By virtue of his wins in both
classes, Ryan went home not only with the
series points lead in the 250cc class, but
with close to $5000 in winnings as well.

The 250cc Pros were given the opportunity to take on the track first, and when
they came out of the first tum, Ryan was
already establishing his dominance for the
day. Ryan grabbed the holeshot, followed
by Honda-mounted Jeff Pestana and
Suzuki rider Rusty Holland. Tyson
Vohland, riding a Yamaha, sat on
Holland's rear fender in fourth. Before the
first lap was over, Holland had moved
around Pestana and Ryan started pulling
away. Less than a lap later, Holland
crashed in a rut and Pestana was, once
again, running in second.
The action behind Ryan began to heat
up even further, as Vohland got a face full
of mud and was forced to toss his goggles.
Without eye protection, Vohland backed
away from the leaders and was soon challenged by his younger brother, Tallon.
Tallon was boxed in on the start and spent
the fir t three laps maneuvering his
Suzuki around traffic. Once he could see
hi brother, Tyson, up ahead, he wasted
no time dropping him back to fifth, and
then Tallon tried catching the leaders. But
Ryan, Pestana and Holland were too far
ahead by this time, and Tallon had to settle for fourth at the checkered flag. Ryan
scored the win ahead of Pestana, Holland,
and Tallon and Tyson Vohland.
Tallon Vohland nailed the holeshot in
the second moto, but would later be
penalized a lap for jumping the gate. The
Suzuki rider would go on and win the
race but would officially place out of the
top 10 after being assessed the penalty.
Several riders, including first moto
third-place fini her Holland, were
involved in a first-tum pile-up. Holland
would later finish the second moto 17th.
Early in the race, Tallon Vohland was
momentarily passed by Rodney Smith
before settling back into the lead.
However, Smith stayed close to Tallon,
while last week's class winner Scott Myers
tucked in behind the leading duo.
A little ways back in fourth and fifth
were Pestana and first-moto winner Ryan.
Pestana would eventually crash in a mudhole, while Ryan would inch his way closer to third-place Myers but could never
get close enough to challenge. Tallon
Vohland would physically cross the finish
line first, but Smith was credited with the
win, followed by Myers and overall winner Ryan.
There was plenty of action at the start
of the first 125cc Pro moto. Pestana and
250cc clas winner Ryan shared the
holeshot, with Pestana getting the upper
hand .exiting the first tum. Pursuing in
third and fourth were Suzuki ridpr Greg
Tierhe' er and Holland. Moments later,
Pestana fumbled on an uphill and Ryan
hot into the lead. At the same instant,
Tierheimer and Holland tangled and went
down, resulting in a massive traffic jam.
This allowed Ryan and Pestana to break
clear of the pack, while Tyler Hummel
and Tyson Vohland duked it out a ways
back in third and fourth, while Kawasaki
rider Spud Walters snuck up into fifth.
Shortly thereafter, Walters moved by
Vohland when Vohland faltered. Luckily
for Vohland, though, both Hummel and
Walters stumbled a few turns later, allowing Tyson a clear shot into third.
Meanwhile up front, Ryan and Pestana
continued their duel for the lead that was
eventually won by Ryan, although not by
much. Tyson Vohland held on to third,
ahead of Hummel and Walters.
Ryan jumped into the early lead in the
second moto, with Walters and Pestana
chasing in the front-runner's wake.
Pestana quickly relegated Walters to third
only to find that Ryan had already built
up a sizeable cushion over second.
Unbeknown to Ryan, however, was a
faM-moving Tallon VohIand. After a dismal tart, Vohland was soon running
fifth, then second and eventually had a
lock on the leader, Ryan. By late in the
race, Tallon had reeled-in Ryan and was
challenging for the lead. On the Ia t lap,
Tallon made his move and pa sed Ryan
on a downhill double jump. Knowing
that a second place was good enough to
score the overall class win, Ryan did not
fight back and settled for second place at
the checkered flag, just inches ahead of
Pestana. Myers and Walters rounded out
the top five.
In the ev r-so-popular 12Sec Beginner
cla ,Scott Davis scored the overall victory, via 2-1 moto finishes. Dennis Smith,
who won the first moto, couldn't get
untracked in the second round and finished a disappointing 10th, resulting in
sixth overall.
