11 ; ROAD RACE AMA/CCS 600cc Supersport Series: Round 5 e Mike Smith regained his form to win his third 600cc Superspon final of the season. J ason Pridmore leads his Class Racing teammate Fritz Kling in 750cc Supersport, Racin g teammate Steve Crevier, who finished thi rd. Fourth p lace went to Vance & H ines Yamaha's Larry Schwarzbach after a race-long fig h t wi th Crevier and fifth and sixth pl ace fin ishers Bri tt Turkington on the Yosh imu ra Suzuki and Two Bro thers Racing-backed privateer Randy Renfrow. The ra ce began with Kir k getting the jump on the field from his second row starting position. At the end of the fir st lap, tho ugh , it was Smith in front. After two laps, Smith was clear, some three seconds ahead of the sixrider d uel for secon d led by Ren fro w, wi th Ki rk , Crevier, Turkingto n , Schwa rzbac h and Kip p giving chase. A lap la ter and it beca me apparent that nobody was going to keep pace wi th Smi th . He had mad e hi s break and it was going to stick. " T hat's the way it's always been for me," Smith said lat er. " I was just trying to do consi stently fast lap tim es. I saved the tire s in the middle so I could wick it u p at the end." By the sixth of the 12 laps the race fo r second was between five riders as Kirk fad ed to eventually finish seventh. On th at sa me .lap, though, Kipp showed he was the one likely to get the runner-up spot as he streaked from fifth to second in a single lap. " I was geared up to get goi ng quick this week ," Kipp said later. " Bu t everybody's out for blood and we were slowing each o ther down. Between turns o ne and three is where I mad e my move. That was a serious drafting ga me. It was th e wildest I've ever been in vol ved in . Mike j ust did n 't have to worry abo u t it. H e was ab le to get away." Kipp was able to get clear fro m the strugg le beh ind him, leavin g Turkingto n, Crevier, Schwarzbach and Renfrow to race for th ird.
