Pi cotte didn 't wait as long as usu al before taking th e lead at the start of th e race, and he led a t th e completio n of th e fir st lap. Mathews was seco nd wi th Adamo third, Kieffer , fou rt h a nd Gale fifth. By thi s tim e, Ki yo Watanab e' s H onda was already expiring as he entered th e pits with a puff of smo ke. On th e fifth lap, Picot te, who had o pe ned up a commandin g lead, pulled o ff the ra ce tra ck on th e front straigh ta way with a bl own mot or. Ada mo took over th e lead , but had Ma th ews in h is shadow. The struggle for th e lead went to th e finish lin e with Adam o beating Mathews despi te having less top sp eed on th e ultra-lo ng front straight. But Koehler dropped o ff a t th e end, lea ving Gale to chase Zampach to th e line, co m ing up a scant .596 second short . "The draft rea lly p layed a part," Koehler said. " We used each o ther 's draft to move back a nd forth."
