T he second 125cc pr eliminar y featured Orego n' s Scott Allen a nd Stan Capps, also rid ing Hondas, battling for fir st positi ons with All en co m ing o u t o n top. T he best heat race acti on came in th e 500cc Sp o rtsm an class whi ch, due to th e lar ge a mou nt o f riders, was div ided in to fo ur heats transferring th e top two finishers to th e A main. Capps put hi s H onda in front o f the I 25cc A ma in , but did n 't spe nd m uc h time in th e number o ne position as Nyb lood , riding a Rick Weidmanspo nsored H onda, pull ed into the lead co m ing out of turn two. Nyb lood never looked back to witness th e incredible five-way battle for second. which went Ca p ps ' wa y after he fended o ff last year's winner Allen . Fou r th went to Saxton , and Jon Wiley pi cked up fifth . Nyblood ca me back in the 250cc race to lead Jeff Young, Joe McCormick a nd Denny McN anna y at the start, a rid like he had done in 125cc co mpetitio n , left th e field well behind in h is q uest for two wins. The seasoned pro was victorious, the only rider of th e da y to wi n two classes. McCormick Iollow ed Honda -mounted N ybl o od across for seco nd , wh ile Young, Bernert and Eri k Giertsen fill ed th e top five. Thirteen rid ers lined up on th e gri d for the first heat, Lyons was first 0 [[ the line, followed by Bob Vizcarro and Castillo. In lap two, Castillo passed Vizcarra a nd set his sights on Lyons. By lap four, Castillo was right on Lyons' rear wh eel , but Lyons managed to sh ut the door o n every a tte m p t to pass. Castillo tried everythin g possib le to ta ke number one spot but Lyon s held o n un til th e chec kered n ag. In th e second heat Vizcarro held the lead spot, with Lr.ons and Castillo within strilc.ing distan ce u n u l lap five when Vizcarro's engine ceased.
