turn two (when the rain started), but didn't crash it, I was slid ing along, and set the motorcycle down like a bicycle w ith out a kicks tand ." Toomer only had one rear wheel, a nd lost too much tim e, wh ile impa tien tly wait ing for their slick to be removed and a DOT Du nlop moun ted, to challenge for the GTU lead. They finished seventh over all, fourt h in class. Doug Phill ips ' N2 Racing a nd La ney Cobb's TBR Endu ra nce fol lo wed Toomer home in eight h and ninth, respectively. Team Yamaha Endurance - new ly reformed with ex-Hu ma n Race team lead ride r Andy Fenwick a nd Dean Mi z dal pilotin g the bike, an d Joe Krebs tuning - were also .having problems after running nea r the top, and finished 10th overall, fourth in GTO. But neither Mizdal nor Fenwick, who bo th ran some of the fastes t times at Texas, would drop the team's FZR1000 bike. Instead, a new, supposedly better type of unspecified battery was being used for the fi rst time, and it ran out of juice in the final hour. The team thought the fuel pump had gone south, replaced it, and quickly realized their error. In all, the faulty battery cost them too much 'time in the pits, and dropped them out of the top fiveoverall. At the start of the race, it was business as usual for Gold Hill Racing's Ch ristian Gardner, wh o flew out to a si zea ble, ea rly lea d before eve n the first lap was completed. Dutchman 's Zampach was second, with Fastli ne's Lynch , Fabian Cor tez a boa rd the Keysto ne en t ry, Te a m Ame rica 's Wood y Dea the rage and Yamaha's Fenwick bunched together and fighting amongst themse lves. Gardner lapped the entire field by the one-hour mark, and looked set to run away with the race. But Gardner would soon fall prey to the slick conditions. The rain only lasted a bo ut 20 m inutes, and aft e r the s ki es had stopped pour ing, Ga rd ner was about to pit to replace rains w ith slick tires when he highsided in the infield, and tore ligaments in his right ankle , ending his day. Crew Chief John Ho pperstad came out of semi-retirement to fini sh th e race (with Ph ilKress) in 16th. After both Gold Hill and the rai n w e re go ne , Mot o Libert y I N a nkai e merged s u p re me by the halfway point. And amazingly en ough, the y used s lick tires in the ra in , a nd throughout the race. Team Scream was hot on their heels (until they were docked a lap), as was Dutchman (until Zampach fell a second time), a nd Team America, who moved around Moto Liberty I N ankai in the final half hour.
