" I just had ano the r smooth ride , no problems," sai d Ham el after two and a ha lf hours of hi gh speed desert racin g. Foll owin g H am el but not too close were Kawasaki teammates Pau l Krau se a n d L arry R oesel er, both KX500 moun ted. T he du st played a maj or roll in keep in g the racers spread out fo r most of the day. A nine o' cloc k bomb got the riders off to a start just before the heat picked up. A thick cloud layer luckily kept the temperatures in the 80s com pa red to the hi gh 90s of the preceding days. Fir st to the bomb was Ham el with a big lead. " I had 100 yards at th e bomb and I never looked back," he said. N 2 Next through the sandy bomb funnel was Krause foll owed closely by Roeseler. A surprise was Eric Hall gath scream ing hi s Yamaha YZI25 to the bomb in fourth position . A few seconds later it was a crowd with Scott Stearns, Kenny Parry, Jimm y L ew is, Ron Bragdon , and Todd H o y in to w. Another shock was Anna Cody getting such a good start. Cody said, ." 1 was even surprised with my start. It was gr eat, even fast guys like j ohnny Cambell and Craig Adams had to pass me." As the racers crossed the first vall ey and spread ou t, Hamel was quickly stretching h is lead . With Jittle wind it was difficult for . passing and even more diffi cu lt for the ride rs way.back in th e pack. Senior rid er Ned McNabb felt he had a good start but ran into trouble in the early stages, "T he du st was so thi ck I couldn ' t see a thing. I wait ed till we got in the rocky washes and broke my own trail. I was passing people wh o were riding in th e dus t." Class races were heating u p as Parry was o n the gas wanting to put tim e on " Vet Threat " Scott Steans. Ph il Halcomb and Lewis were swapping th e 250cc Expert lead and Bragdon held the Vet Open class lead. T he cou rse made its way towards Bessim er Min e and turned ba ck towa rds Mean s with a spring across the Moon Rock Roll ers. H amel was in cru ise mode and hol ding a threeminute lead, as he cha rged back to the .pi ts. Kra use and Roeseler were still spread two minutes apart with Ha lIgath foll owin g . Todd Ho y h ad worked past Parry and Stearns only to cras h hi s big KTM and break the fram e, caus ing h im to retire aft er o nly o ne loop. Lewis a lso got pa st Stearns lat e in the first loop. As the leaders pressed on for a second go aro und, disa ster struck H allgath . In the du st of lappers, he h it a ravine and pounded into th e ground, injuring his neck. Parr y was the first to reach him. "He was breathing but he was still o ut of it. I could only go and get Rescue T hree ," said Parry. Lewis came by nex t and sto pped to block the course wit h Hall gath 's do wned bike. Stearns was next on the scene and sacrificed his race by go ing back to the last check to get hel p. La ter it was learned that H al Igath had req ues ted a neck brace and rod e back to cam p. After this the o n ly pos itio n cha ng e was Bragdon mo ving past Stearns. Cha rging through the pack on hi s "Super Ho nda" was Vet 250cc rider Ro n Laws on. H e had moved up from a poor start to th ird place in th e Vet class . Ann a Cod y took a tumble in th e mi ddl e of her second loop and saw her chan ces of reaching a goa l slip away . " I want to finis h in the top 10 overall thi s year. I was close , but after my fall I just cru ised, " said Cod y. In wha t ended up to be a ru nawa y, H amel crossed the finis h only a little over two hours . Lewis bro ugh this 250 th rough in fifth overall to grab the 250cc class win a couple of mi nutes ahead of Vet Open class winner Bragdon. In a lat e race charge, Lawson caug h t up to the rear wheel of Stearns. " I th ou gh t he was a lapper , it wasn 't until we were thro ugh the Ilag that I realized it was Stearns. " I was third at the bo mb and aft er the fiat s I was in first. It was my first tim e o ut in front ," sa id Kell er wh o thanked Catalina Yam ah a. Second Novice was T ommy Roberts, havin g a great ride o n hi s Yam aha YZ1 25. Roberts said of hi s rid e, " I had som e trouble with another 125 right after the bomb but that was the last I saw of anyone." Following Rober ts was Steve Naka mot o of th e Shamrocks . Dubach dashes to Toronto SX win By Kyle Myers TO RO~10,CANADA, MAY2 For the second year in a row T eam Yam aha's Doug Dub ach won the Molson Expert Supercross held in the T oronto Skydom e. An estimated 44,910 cheering fan s wat ched Dubach hold off a charging Larry Ward to earn $5000 of the purse. Fo ur heat races tha t transferr ed th e to p th ree ride rs to the main were run. When the gate dropped for the fir st hea t, La rry Ward gra bbed the lead with Keith Johnson, T om Carson an d Carl Vaill ancou rt follo wi ng . Vaill an court quickly sho t by Cason, while Ward opened u p a five second lead o n J ohnson . Ward held on for the win ahead of J o hnson an d Vallian court. The second heat saw Mike Jones rip the start with 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross Cha mp ion Brian Swink, J im Holl ey, and J eff Glass in tow. Gl ass was the first rider to make a move as he darted by Holley o n the openi ng lap , but he fell in o ne of the many ru ts. J on es and Swin k pulled away as B they battled for the lead. On the third lap, Swink worked by j ones , but J ones quickl y retoo k the lead . j o nes held on for the win over Swink while Holley rounded out the top three. In th e third heat , Dou g H enry led from start to finish, taking an easy win over Canadian cha mp Ross Pederson and Chris Knox. The fourth heat saw Dubach win easily, while Keith Turpin, Li no Zecca and Brett Devries fought for the o ther two tra nsfer positions. Former factory Suzu ki rider Turpi n held second with Zecca and Devries o n hi s tail. O n the last lap Devries jumped by Zecca to take the th ird spot and move into the mai n event. .In th e first of th ree semis whic h tra nsferred the top four riders , Steve Friesen na iled the holeshot with J essie Wilson , Mart y Burr and David Hand i n to w. Bu rr a n d H a nd kn ocked Wil son back to fo ur th wh ile clos ing in on Friesen. Burr was the first to pas s Friesen , then a lap lat er Hand moved by Chris Lemon and sho t by Wil son . On the last lap, Lemon dove underneath Hand in the last turn and scoo ted by for second behind winner Marty Burr. Hand and Fri esen ro unded o ut the top four. The second semi saw J eff Surwall jump out to an early lead over Shane Drew , Brad Lockhart and Dann y Pominville. Halfway in to lap one, Drew took over the lead, but a lap later Surwall returned the favor. Lo ckhart joined in and pa ssed Drew with two laps to go . At th e fini sh, Surwall took the win with Lockhart, Drew and T om Carson behind, Cars on got kn ocked down but came back to fourth on the last lap. In the third and last sem i, Glass led from start to finish to take an easy win over Bill Wallin, Chris Pomeroy, and Chris Shipclark. T he last chance qualifier saw Zecca blast into the lead with j ess Wil son and Todd Sinclair behind. Sinclair shot by Wilson in the second turn as the three riders battled for th e lead. Zecca bobbled, letti ng Sinclair and Wilson get by. One lap later Sinclair fell, and Wils on moved into th e lead . Zecca dogged Wilson, bu t co uld n' t find a way around. Wi lson took a narrow victory over Zecca and the last spot for the fina l. Wh en th e 25 rid er field jammed into the first turn, Hand led the way with Shipclark, Fri esen , Knox and Dub ach in tow . Ward, Swink, Jones and H enry were just a few of th e riders who went down in the first turn pile-up. Johnson. who started sixth, moved by Dubach , Knox an d Friesen o n the o pen ing lap. One lap later, j ohnson worked by Sh ipclar k, wh ile Hand pulled away from the field. Dub ach follo wed j ohnson and was now in third. Dubach turned o n the gas and passed J ohnson a nd Hand in one swoop to take th e lead , while johnso n also got by Hand. Dub ach and J ohnson star ted to open up a lead , while Ward pa ssed Friesen for fourth. Ward th en doubled by Hand as Hen ry zap ped Friesen for fifth. j ohnson runnin g a lon e in seco nd, .endoed over a doubl e and remounted in fourth after Ward and Hand went by. Dubach now had a five-second lead on Ward, but Ward was clo sing in. J ones, wh o was battling wi th H enry after the first turn clash , was on the move and by the third lap had passed H enry, j ohnson and Hand to take over third. Back up front, Dubach and Ward were battling for the lead, u ntil Ward fell o n th e badl y rutted trac k. Swink, no w in. th e fifth position after getting up tiear last after th e pi le-
