~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ . Dr. Bob Meister won seven out of nine races at Blackhawk Farms Ra cewa y. Well s-to- Wendover H are & H o u nd . This event was run as a Na tional Hare & H ound in 1989 a nd hi gh cost s a nd techn ical p ro blem s derailed the even t in 1991, but it retu rned with a new spri ng dat e, a nd a ll-ne w cours e for 1992. Ri der tu rn out was low , with lI S riders fro m as far away as T exas. sho wi ng up to ride one o f th e few remaini ng poi n tto-p o int races in th e co un tr y. Ri ders start ed in rows o f 10, a t 30-seco nd interval s. and tim es were adj usted a t th e finish. Riders met in downto wn Wells. and were esco rted th ro ug h tow n to the sta ring lin e on th e edge of town . . Starting in th e first ro w, Lundgreen pushed his Yamaha WR 500 into an immedia te lead. foll ow ed closely by Ca liforn ia Sen ior rider . T om Barb ero . Sor en son star ted on th e third row w, but immedi ately began moving up throu gh other riders on th e first sectio n of th e co u rse. Lundgreen was leading by a co up le o f minutes at gas o ne, wh ich was 30 mil es into th e race, followed by Barbero a nd Sorenson. Several miles later, rid ers began th e lon g climb through deep woods into Pequop Mountain s. The course followed the very top o f the range for mil es, often using tra ils th at were qu ite narro w and twisty. It was at thi s point Lundgreen got stuck behind a herd of wild horses . "T hey wouldn 't mov e, and there was j ust no way to pas s them, Lu ndgreen said. " It defi nitely cost me some time. Ot her rid ers mentioned seei ng. and som etimes sharing the tra il with the horses that covered the rocky terra in at su rp risingly high spe eds. . At gas two, Lundgreen sti ll led , but Sorenson had moved into a dose second ahead of Barbero. The last section of th e race went into the Goshute Mountains and featu red more tight and rocky trails through the woods, before d ropping down lo fini sh at the Nevad a Cro ssing Casino in Wend over . Lundgreen and Soren son were a lmost side by side for the last few mi les. but both kn ew that Sorenson wa s a head by o ne minute on ad j usted tim e. Sorenson cras hed in a washout on ly a half mile from th e fini sh, but o n ly lost a li ll ie tim e and -Ilew through th e fin ish o n ly a sho rt di stance behind Lundgreen . O pen pr actice o n Friday had 89 riders in atte nda nce to check thi n gs ou t. ' Meister' s firs t even t a nd victory was in the Solo GT O event , wh ere he ran aw ay o n his Yam aha OWOl Su perbike. H avin g split from hi s AMA Pro spo nso r, Ya maha o f J acksonville, N.C. , Dr. Meister is now tuning o n his o wn with help from fri end s. The setu p wor ked as Meist er foll o wed fo r a couple o f laps and th en blaste d by Kevin Slezewski, who go t th e good sta rt and led the first thr ee laps. Brad Du nk el , Kevin Wiat er and Steve Douville a ll bat tled Slezewski for second . Dunkel look over th e spot fo r about 10 laps b ut tang led wit h another rider in turn six and cras hed o u t of th e race . Slezewski inherited seco nd for goo d , as Meister flew to an over 20-seco nd margi n o f victory. 'W ill iam White handed Meister his two seco nd-p lace results. Whi te, rid in g a ' H onda CBR600 F2, as was Meister, blasted out fro nt in th e Midd leweight Superbike event wi th Dr. Bob ho t o n hi s heels , A surprised Meister tri ed every mov e he kn ew to get by wh ite but it was not lO be. A last lap dr aft pass was Meister's last chance. As the pair exi ted turn seven , Meister was two bik e len gths back. Whi te hada couple o f evasive man euvers read y and Dr. Bob p ulled o ut o f the dr aft just a tic k too la te and White won by less tha n half of a bike len gth a t the str ipe. Al Bert agnoli and Kevin Graham d uel ed for th ird all race lo ng bu t way off th e leaders' pa ce. Bert agnoli held on for the position. While th ere was hea ted racing in several classes, the Open class produced the night's best fireworks. In heat ra ce ac tio n, David Mens er won the first heat and then ' Joel Barrow and Pau l Morgan battled the entire way in th e second heat. Dieing for th e lead , Morgan hoo ked a rut in turn four and almost took both rid ers o u t. bu t he recovered a nd held on to win . Wh en the flag dr opped o n the Open main even t, Mor gan got the lead on h is H art Racing Yam aha with Menser second and Barrow third. Barrow took over seco nd as he passed Men ser com ing off of turn four. On th e third lap , Bar row passed Morgan for the po int posi tion, bu t the lead would cha nge si x tim es over the remai n ing laps. Barrow was faster throu gh tu rns th ree and fou r, while Morgan had the edge in the first two corners. The race was decided whe n Morgan bobbled on the wh ite flag lap, all owing Barrow to open up a small b u t WIn n ing marg in . Mor gan finished second with Mense r a di stant thi rd and th e Falk ne r bro th ers taking the next two spo ts - Dean fou rth and John fifth. O ther action saw Bobby Lewis , wh o is on th e comebac k tra il aft er a seven-year ab sence fro m racing, p ull th e ho lesh o t a t th e start of the Senior class main on the Menser Brothers H onda. H is lead was sho rrlived. however, as David Flow ers and J ack T ou ch ett e soon dropped h im to third. Flow ers led u nt il the fifth lap , but was zapped by T ou ch et te o n th e i n sid e. In 250ec cla ss ac tio n, David Men ser managed to stay in front of hard-charging Brian T homas for the first nine laps of th e 10-lap main. After the pair took th e white fla g, T homas passed Men ser on th e hi gh line in tu rn one. T homas held th e lead down th e back stra igh ta way bu t was the victim of a Mens er block pass in turn thr ee.
