MAY23 record 950 mo tocross and nearly 150 cross count ry riders attended th e 1992 T eam G reen Spring Na tionals a t H igh Point Raceway. The Sa turday event took place on the eve o f th e 16th Annu al Hig h Po int Nationa l Ch ampio nsh ip 125/250cc Series round a nd hos ted riders from nearl y 30 states. A o The star o f the show turned o u t to be New York 's Scott Sheak , a rising Pro-Am star who captured the o verall wi ns in bot h the 125 and 250cc A class rac ing . The T eam Green/ Scott/ Fox Racing-suppo rt ed 18-yea r-o ld o u tpaced a 37 rider 125cc A field by winning both mo tos. In the first moto Sheak fo ugh t for the early lead with fellow Kawasaki pi lot Bill y Silvar ole and Fox /Sco tt/ Wiseco/Yok o hama/Cern ic's Suz u ki rider Davey Coombs before p ulli ng away in th e late going . Silvarole was a com forta ble second until a last lap fall o pened the door for Coombs and T eam G reen / Barr's Competit ion/ Answer-ba cked J im Neese to get close. But as the two left to avoid the fallen Silvarole, Coombs and Neese coll ided with Neese go ing down. Silvarol e recovered io o ut-sprint Coombs to th e fin ish with Michigan 's J eff Curry Four th a n d W est Virgini a 's Stev e Chi ldress fifth. Shea k was agai n off and ru nning in the second mo to, wh ile Curry and Coombs su ffered early problems .and brou gh t up the rear of the pa ck. T he 18-year-old Neese raced int o seco nd for th e moto an d hi s 7-2 showing proved to be second-best to Shea k in the o vera ll ta ll y. Suzu ki's 15' yea r-o ld Schoolboy star Greg Rand earn ed th ird overa ll wit h a 6-3 tall y. Shea k went down a t the start of th e firs t 250cc A mota and allowed Neese, Ohio's H ayden Richards, and Flor ida's Kevin Foley to make a clea n break fro m the 33-rider pack. But Rich ards dropped his cha in o n the second lap and Foley hi t the gro und o n a slick corne r, leaving Neese out fro nt. Cu rry made a furio us late bid for the lead and passed Neese on the last lap. T hi rd at the flag after a remarkable comeback was Sheak. The fin al 250cc A mo to saw Shea k win hi s third moto of the day and wra p up his doub le overa ll hon o rs. Neese was agai n second overa ll with a 2-2 sho wing with Curry a J-4 th ird overa ll, Virgin ia 's Chad Lou gh . a surprise start of Sunday's J25cc Pro Nationa l, scored fourth o vera ll wit h a 6-3 tall y. T he top Open A rider at Hi g h Point was Maryland's J ay Rassa, He won both motos to defea t do uble run nerup Kirk Rogers of Pennsylvania. Eighty 125cc B riders meant th at the class wou ld be sp lit into two division s. O k lah o ma 's multi -ti me Mini cyd e Nati on al Cha mpio n Robbie Reynard was the overa ll in gro up one with local star Chris DeSantis earn ing runner-up hon ors. T he group two winner was Pen nsylvania 's o wn Robert Stock, wh o out-paced Ohio's Roland Diamond a nd Florida's J osh Latina for to p hono rs. Reynard later went down to defea t at the hands of Ohio's Rand in the 125cc Schoolbo y class. In bo th mOlDS Rand holeshot o n hi s R&D Suzuki R MI 25, whi le the Fox -backed Reyn ard stru gg led off th e line. In both motes Reynard caugh t th e lead er but could not make an y passes count. Florida ' s Anth on y Po co robba pl aced th ird in the Schoolboy class and later added th e group two 250cc B class win to hi s weekend ta ke. The Ho ndamounted Pocoro bba to pped Cern ic's Suzuki rider Kirk Kru ze for th e win, whi le Yam ah a-mo unt ed Nick T ro utm an ran th·ird. T enn essee's Mik e Nutter pushed his P ro-Circu it/PowerMist/Motu l-backed Kawasak i KX250 to th e gr oup one 250cc B victory over Ohio 's Jaso n Rankin. T he to p O pen B rider was New York 's Benjam in Trask, a 17-year-old Hon da CR500 p ilot, New J ersey's Da vid Fa rmer a n d loca l racer Shanno n Rhoades rounded out the top five. Seventy -seven riders signed up in the Junior (+25) cla ss, forci ng race orga nizers to sp lit the class int o expert and a mateur g roups. Flor id a 's Fo ley pro ved h imself fastest in the 34-rider A class by winn ing bo th rn o to s over Coombs. Ohio's Gary Stoffer, an early leader in the second mota, finis hed third overa ll. T he to p (+25) B rider was New J ersey's Richard Elias. Fastest of the Vet A (+30) riders .was Su zuk i RM250 rider Ray Neibel . Sixt ytwo Vet B riders meant ano ther split wit h North Carolina's Kevin Austin scori ng th e group one win and Pen nsylvan ia's Leslie H easley leading th e seco nd group. New J ersey's J oel Dengler was the top rider in the Senior (+40) class . One star of the Mini classes was DGY's Matt Maximoff, the winner of the Super Mini and Seni o r 85cc cla sses. Max im off was chase d across the checkered flag in both even ts by Kawasa kimounted J.D. Co lli ns. Other Youth class win ners incl ud ed Oh io 's Brock Se lla rs (85cc 12-13), Kaw as a ki mo unt ed Chris Considine (85cc 7-11), 65cc leader J eff Gibson and Pee Wee CN class cha mp Micky Mar sha ll.
