MAY I AI Ru ssell Yamaha-backed Jeff Russell won th e opening night a t Boi se Sh ort T rac k. followed closely by another local favorite, Ricky Henson, and a ho st of out-of-town riders from severa l states. T he predom inately local crowd went wild as Ru ssell went the distance at the Owyhee MC Clubgrounds. In the first Junior/Expert heat race, J ohn - Wincewicz got th holeshot followed by Troy _Rose, Ron Waters, Ru ssell and Hen son. On lap fhree , R ussel1moved up to third and began to push Rose. A lap later. Russell took over second and Anderson got by Waters. The positions were set, and at th e ch eckered £lag it' was Wincewicz, Russel l, Rose and Henson. Heat two saw Charlie Brown lead wire-towire. Close behind Brown was Mickey Fay and Dan Stanley. Kirk Strong pa ssed Rand y Roose, then Stanley. On the last lap. Fay went under Brown in tum four and came within in ch es of beating Brown. The fini sh ing o rder was Bro wn , Fay . Strong, Speedy Kell , Roose and Stanley. In the mai n event, two rows of pros jammed the starting area. Russell snared the holeshot ahea d of Fay, Henso n, Win cewia and Strong . Lap three saw Hensongoby Fay , to the delight of the hometown crowd. Ru ssell , Henso n a nd Fay ran the res t of the race in that order. At th e checkered £lag it was R ussell , Henson, Fay, Wincewicz, Roo se, Strong and Stanley. , In the first Pro-Am heat race, Jim Morinville had the initial lead over Bruce Scott, Ryan Anderson, Jeff Wat ers and T om Sherman. Scott was pushing Morinville every where, then o n lap two Anderson wen t under both 01 them to take over th e lead . At th e Finish it was Anderson. Seen. Morinville , and Sherman . \Va ters went down in tum four j ust befo re th e end. H ea t two saw Scott McPherson go wire-towire ahead 0 1 Rodney Reyn ol ds, Will ie H alpert and Eric Rickman . In the main event. Reyno lds had a sho rtlived lead until Scott, Morin viJIe and And erso n go t by. Reynolds and Anderson battled for severa l laps ' before And erson fin all y got away. Meanwhile th e story was McPherson , who had jumped th e lin e and sta rted from the back row . McP herson mounted a ch ar ge lli ke a man possessed. In no tim e a t all , he wen t thr ough half th e pa ck and was g un ning fo r th e lead . And erson went under Morin viJIe, as did McPherson. It's been a lon g time between reces for the former Harley-Davidson factory rid er. T welve years ago. Keen er left Ill in ios' San ta Fe Sh ort T rac k, VIa ambu lan ce and retired from d irt tra ck racing, Las t year , he began " playing on th e ice" and won th e Senior Ama teu r National tit le. The Senior class was large eno ugh to require three heats, and in th e first it was Tim Hazen fighting off a steady challenge by John Zwerican with the two puttin g some distance o n th e rest of the field to the wire. In heat two, Keener go t o ut of th e hole a little late but swiftly took over th e point by lap two. Roc ky Watson sh ow ed th e rest 0 1 th e co mpe ti tion th e fast wa y aro und th e ha lf mile in heat three. Ph il Mann pi cked o ut a spot in line after smokin ' th em in th e las t chance qualifier. The field was narrowed to 12 riders for th e final, and Keener launched it off th e line with Tim Hazen in hot pursuit. As th e two Har ley riders o pe ned up a hol e, the battle was o n behind the m . John Zwerican. Rock ey Watson, and Dan Diener were all in co nten tio n for third. Zwerican made the last move toward th e £la g as Diener moved off the tra ck and Watson stayed put an d sett led for fourth. Hazen stayed as close on Keen er' s ta il , hut co uld n' t get within stri king di stance of the fonner pro. Brandon Rose made a victorious co me back taking the '65cc cla ss. By th e time he reached the checkered £lag in the final. he was hall a tra ck in front of second place fini sher KC Knodel. Rose sustained serio us inju ries late last season but was back in top form for his first time back on th e din. Pa t Buchanan sta rted out the seaso n with a win in the Prol Am class. Three heats and a last chance qua1i£ier were needed to reduce th e field to 12 lor the fin al. Heat one bel onged to J ohn Lowe, wh o took contro l aft er two peg-t o-pe g cha lle nge s with Paul Kops and Mark Dav idson . Heat two saw Brent Armbruster ho ld a slig h t ad van tage over Go rdon Schopiera y to the wir e, and heat three went to Buchan an with Gr eg Sim s holding o nto seco nd under th e £la g. J ack Mayer, wh o was edged o ut 01 third in th e last hea l, found a spo t on the line i n th e main with a win in the last chance q ua lifier. . Lowe and Buch ana n shot off th e lin e sideby-side in th e fina l and the race was o n fro m the get -go. Buchan an inched closer and closer to Lowe, then reeled hi m in o n lap three in turn four . Lowe looked to return the favor , and co m ing into the checkered na g moved in to pa y Buchanan back, but slip ped o rr th e gr oo ve an d down int o the marbles instead. As riders came th ro ugh the clo ud of dust it was Bu chanan in front, Sch opieray in second, Brent Armb ruster in third and John Lowe wavin g a t the rest of the field as they went by. Kawasaki T eam Green /MMF Escondido Cycle Center /O'Nea l-backed Dennis Dahlin rebounded [rom a fir st mota crash to score th e second mota an d o verall wins in the 125cc Intermediate cla ss. Dahlin came back to top th e 250cc Intermediate class, do mi - ' nating the action a t the Racing Enterprisespromoted Saturday motocross at G len Helen Ra ceway. The large turnout 01 riders were greeted with a su pe rcross style tra ck a nd the wi n was a stout 35 mph as practice started. The wind made the trick y obstacles even more difficu lt. The 125cc In termediate race was a two- man do gfight between Dahlin and T y Kad y. Dahlin grabbed the hole shot at the start of .th e fir st mo to, only to be passed by Kady a short time lat er. Dahlin stalked Kady as th e two sliced th rou gh lapped traffic, Kad y was th e master of zippin g through Iappers, and Dahlin found himself frustrated looking for a way around. Co m ing up to a large step-up doubl e jump, Dahhn was forced way to th e left by a lapper, an d he la nded ou t of shape a nd crashed hard . Kad y slip ped away for th e easy win wi th Dahlin recovering for second . Moto two saw Dah lin holeshot, with Kad y o n his rear fend er. The two riders were never mor e th an a co u ple of bike lengt hs apart for th e firs t part of th e mo to. As they en tered lapped tra ffic, Dahlin was more carefu l to gu ar d hi s lin es, and p lanned his mo ves so th a t Kady was never able to mount a serious a ttem pt a t a pa ss. Dahlin too k the chec kered, with Kady clo se be hi nd. In th e 250cc Intermediat e class, th e sto ry wasn 't much different as Dahlin too k co n tro l early ah ead of J ason McCormick and J ames Dominici. McCo rm ick rod e well a nd kept Da hlin in sigh t for m os t o f th e mote. McConnick 's day go t worse though, as his Ho nda was blown ou t fro m under h im by a .strong gus t of wi nd . Dah lin scored an easy win over Do min ici and Steve Ferna nde z. Dahl in was so far ou t in fro nt o r mot a two tha t he pas sed all bu t th e lead Vet Pro rider : Tim Ca u by, who had sta rted 20 seconds car ler. Even a q uick sto p to p ick up the kickstarter tha t had fallen ofl his 125 earlier in th e da y, did n 't arrect Dahl in 's lead.
