In the first of the two Ex per t heats, Darren Eri chs en a nd Brian Vill ella waited for a Roeder mistake that never came their way. Until the halfway mar k, the last three transfer pos itio ns were in flux. Donnie Estep, Bob Buffington, Ian Segedy, Mark Corsetti and Dave Lloyd battl ed for a ticket to the ma in . Wit h the whi te nag displayed, Segedy , Ll oyd and Corsetti took their best sho ts. At the checkered , it was Roeder, Eric hsen, Villella, Estep, Bu ffing ton and Corsetti, in that order. Segedy, Lloyd, Danny Koelsch, Ro nn ie RaIl and Robert Lewis loa ded for th e trip home. Mor eh ead, Mertens, Dave Ray burn, Gordy Schopieray a nd G reg Crow new in for mation fo r the major ity of th e second Expert heat. Only th e last transfer to the mai n was in q uestion. Steve Champai n, T o m Co lso n and Les Washbon wag ered for th e ticket. With a last-la p pa ss, Wash bon made the ma in. Champain, Co lson , Brian Kromroy, Curt Reh mer t, Todd Conant and George Haas were sent pa ckin g. Mor ehead chose the ou tside pol e for th e start of th e Expert ma in even t, but Darren Eri ch sen won th e race to th e first corner. Eri ch sen comp leted th e first lap with Roeder, Mert ens , Morehead and Rayburn in tow . T he lar ge crowd got what it pa id for , as th e duos of Er ichsen and Ro eder , .a nd Moreh ead and Mert ens , worked o n each other a ll over th e rough tra ck. O n the start of th e four th lap , Eri chsen got off hard in turn two. " It happened so fast I'm not sure what happened. I was usin g the same line tha t I used o n the previous laps," said a sligh tly dazed Er ichsen. Post race in spection of th e pieces reveal ed tha t th e frame might have fractured a t the for k head . All of th e crews seemed to be satisfied wi th thei r race set ups, as very few cha nges were made during the pe riod befor e the restart. T he si n g le -file rest art had Roed er, Mertens, Morehead, Raybu rn , Vill ella, Estep , Bu ffin gto n, Cors etti, Schopiera y a nd Cro w rea dy for th e remaining six laps. Mor ehead grabbed th e lead as Roed er had to tame a sma ll w heel stand. Roeder and Mor ehead traded th e lead repea tedl y, as th ey used a variety of lines. At the completion of lap seven, th e top five seemed set, as Roeder , Morehead, Mertens, Vill ella and Raburn rod e in single-file formation. Co rsett i and Estep had not yet decided on sixth. Washbon, Crow a nd Sch opieray were in the same q ua nda ry over ni nth. Morehead used the last thr ee laps to clo se o n Roed er, on ly to bobble in turn two of th e fin al tour. "This is o ur Na tional bike and a good motor - we wa nted to win this race," said Roeder in th e victory la ne. O ne o f th e lar gest smi les bel onged to Mertens , who finished th ird. "This feels good after a year and a half off ," sa id Merte ns. On lap one of the J unior main, th e Harts - James a nd Roy - had Brett Beyer sandwiched. Rod Mash ue circu lated in fo urt h in front of Eric Johncox, Pa t Buchanan, Mik e Bu tler and Jess Roeder. As the field star ted the secon d ha lf of the event, two thin!:s happened . Butl er almost los t his mou nt in turn two and rejo ined th e field dead last, and up fro nt ; Beyer started to clo se o n race leader James Hart. "With three laps to go I started my run at him. I knew the top was faster and I Just had to wait," said Beyer. Local Team Gr een deal ers and Kawasaki joined for ces to giv e co nti nge ncies to th e highes t placing Kawasaki riders in 18 classes. Factory Connection-backed Ch ris Bower topped both the 250 and l 25cc Am at eur cla sses. Ian O 'Conor hol eshot mo ta one of the 250<:c class, with John T womey and Bower in clo se pursuit. Bower found the fast li nes during the first lap and mad e his way aro u nd Twomey, but O 'Co nnor was three seco nd s ahead of Bower. It took three la ps for Bower to close the gap o n the leader, then O 'Connor bobbled allowing Bower to get by an d tak e his firs t win of the da y. Nick VanPraag cau ght up to Twomey at th e finish line, bu t he came up a bike length sho rt of pass ing Twomey. Twomey led mot a two out of the stan. O 'Connor was in second but fell early on lap one and remo unted midpack. Bo wer was back . in fifth after the first la p. J eff Ruga r , Bern ie Radtke and Andy Ru shford were sandwic hed betw een Bower and lead er T womey. After two lap s, Bower moved into second p lace , bu t Ru shford stu ck to hi s rear fender, hopi ng to repass hi m. Bower even tually pulled away a nd ga ined ground o n T wo mey. Wit h less th an two laps left in th e mota , Bower was able to pass Twomey and tak e th e lead. Radtke and Ru shford ended th e mo to back in th e pa ck. O 'Connor pas sed Rugar o n th e last lap for th ird p lace. Mike Bissell got the lead quickl y in th e fir st Senior Min i mote after T o mmy Lake fell in th e wh oops. Bissell won th e mot e with a big lead on Robert Gregg. Lake rem ounted slowly and finished th ird. .Bissell, again, was ou t fron t in th e second mo to . Suddenly hi s motor cycle started to run badly. Gregg took over first within a lap, a nd he never made any err ors on th e tou gh tra ck and scored the win well ahea d of seco nd pl ace finisher Lake. Mulliner motors to Huron Motocross win By Roy Knigh t HURON, CA. MAY 2 Over T he Hill Gang Novice Mark Mu lliner won both mo tos to earn the overall wi n at round four of th e Big G uy Promotionssponsored Spri ng Series at Huron Cycle Park. Kawa saki-mounted MuIliner holeshot th e first mot o with Danny Lowers right behind. J eff Marquez soon go t aro und Low ers and set hi s sights o n Mullin er. As Mulliner a nd Marquez pulled away from th e pa ck, a battle ra ged behirid them as Lo wers, Robert J amison, Jim T erry, and Jon Ha nsen vied for third place. MuIliner even tua lly took the chec kered with Marquez close behind. Third went to Hansen , with Terry taking fourth. In the second mo to, MuIliner again took th e hal eshot, thi s tim e with Don Carver and Terry clos e behind. T erry go t around Carver and proceeded do g Mulliner. Lurking beh ind Carver were Hansen and Lowers. Way back in seven th p lace was Marquez. As Carver faded, Ha nsen moved up to third, and J amison to fourth. By th e wh ite flag lap, Hansen had worked around T erry to tak e seco nd sp o t and proceeded to pressure Mu ll iner for first. Marquez had moved up to fourth p lace . Mulliner managed to hold on the lead until the ch eckered nag for th e overall win, while Hansen ca me in a very clo se second. Barely a bike length behind th ose two was Marq uez, who managed to pick off one more rider to take third place and third overall . Terry o nce again finis hed fourth p lace with Jamison ro u nding o u t the top five. The OTHG Beginner class proved exciting as new member Corwin Shropshire ho leshot into the lead with Randy Godich moving into second. After gettin~ a slow sta rt, Perry Ga il moved himself up m to th ird: Godich stuck with Shropshire showing hi m his fron t fender on n umerous occasions, bu t could never qui te get past. They finished in th at or der , with Lawren ce Boulanger an d Ed Tumey finish ing fourth an d fifth, respectively. In the seco nd mo to, Shropshire again go t the holeshot, but with Godich nippin g at his heels, Godich made his move as the two riders came do wn th e fr o nt straight, passing Shropshire in th e do ub les whtch gave him the inside line for the next tum. Meanwhile Gail, who had moved into th ird, suddenly found himself runni ng secon d wh en Shrop· shire wen t do wn . Gail then wen' after Godich and a classic battle ensued with Ga il even· tually co min g out o n top '0 ta ke th e overall '0 '0 25
