Behi nd Gable and Rooney, Rod Tapia, Breu : Bat tin a nd Shawn Colango battled over third. Heading into the woods section of the track, Rooney bo bb led and allowed Tapia and Battin to scoo t pa st, Ba ttin was on m e gas. a nd picked off Tapia over the field-section double jumps. By la p two, Roo ney had recove red from his earlier bobb le and reeled in Tapia. Rooney blasted past T apia and set after Bat ti n. A lap later Rooney powered past Ba ttin and bega n to close the dis ta nce between h imself and leader Ga ble. Rooney out- powered Gable dow n the back stra ightaway 10 stea l th e lead and mot o win . Gable crossed th e fin ish line seco nd, while Co lango wor ked pas t a tiring Ta pia for th ird. . Gable held o n to fin ish second, 10 seconds a hea d of Col an go. Noleen Yamaha 's Lance Smail scored th e win in the 250ec Pr o class wi th two easy mot o wins . Only three riders com pe ted in th e class, so th e Pros were run in co nj u nc tio n with th e 250cc a nd Open Intermediate classes. In mot o o ne, Smail grabbed th e holesho t a nd boasted a l2-second lead at th e fini sh . Mike Bell finished a very di stant second, just ahea d o r Don Boespflug . Rust reels in Carlsbad ST win By Greg Booth CARLSBAD, CA, APR. 25 James Rust went undefeat ed in th e hotly co ntes ted Open J u nior class a t Ca rlsba d Raceway Short Track. In the first hea l, Rust go t th e ho lesho t a nd stuc k to th e pole thro ugh the turns. Brian Maxw ell ran second and was riding high a nd broa dsliding spectacularly when he tried an o uts ide pa ss o n Ru st in tum four and wen t dow n . The cras h broug ht out a co m plete' restart with Ru st again grabbin~ th e holeshot, Ru st ra n first, with Steve Rajeic In hot pursuit. Lap two saw Raj cic high side hard coming o ut of tum two, a nd he retired with a suspected. brok en leg. A si ng le rile restar t had Ru st sti ll in th e lead , but Maxwell was ho t on his heels. Maxwell got by Ru st wh ile ru nning hig h, but Ru st resumed his lead wi th the low line. Brett Bemi s ap peared from now here and sn uck u p on a surprised Maxw ell , inching him o ut at th e line for second, In th e seco nd hea t, Ru st sto le th e hol esho t from a back row pol e position. Maxw ell was running second until he hit the back stretch crash wa ll , but managed to stay up. Bemis seized the opportunity to move into seco nd and th e heat finished in that order. When the main started Rust grabbed a nother ho leshot with Maxwell running seco nd As Rust pulled away, Bemis began runrting side-by-side .w ith Maxwell . They battled lap after lap, with Maxwell maintain ing a slight edge on the cu shi on. Maxwell gradually shook of! The top two then bauled to the wire with Meister stingi ng Sh ill in g at the stripe ro r the win. The GTU ro u nd was similar with the doctor pi cking up win nu mb er two after passin g Donn Lewis. Meist er co nt in ued his attack on Sunday, and Eric Moe provided co mpeti tio n ror Meister in the H eavyweight Su perbike class with Meis ter Da ve Pelt o n (22) slid under J ohn Du pree (11) on Carlsbad Racewa y's short track. edging out Moe a t the lin e for wi n number three , Meister and Kevin G ra ha m had a race-long duel i n the Middleweight Superbike class with Meister o u tridi ng traffi c in the fina l tu rn to tak e th e checkered flag first , Meister the n ham mered Shilling for another win in th e Middleweight G P cla ss and also blistered the U nlimited Supersport division , bringing h is wi n total to six.
