Mankey, mounted on a 1958 Royal-Enf ield 350 Bullet , rode un ch allen ged to first pl ace in Premi er A class. For Brad Ea ton, trac tio n was hard 10 find with hi s 441 BSA as he foll owed in a dista n t second place. • Riders in the Classic A class po sted very close scores on the first loop. Pa te Keen po sted 15 marks for first pla ce, closely foll owed by Mar c Brook s in second with 18 marks. Gal e Petro posted 22 marks 10 hold third, while Stan Boll in nger was one mark behind in fourth. Keen expanded his lead with a remarkable n ine-mark second loop, Brooks posted a disastrous 32-mark second loop and fell back to fourth place. Petro moved into second place with a mu ch impro ved IS-mark loop, whi le Bollinger moved into th ird place. On the third loo p, the fresh, wet snow took a toll on three of the top four riders, and scores rose dramatically. Petro posted a consistent 15-mark loop to move into a tie for first with Keen. Bolli nger tra iled in thi rd with Broo ks a close fou rth place. Suzuki-moun ted Petro again posted a consisten t 14 mar ks on the final loop 10 clinch the win , whi le Keen followed II marks behind for second p lace. Boll in ger finished thi rd on the day, with Brooks on e mark behind in fou rth p lace. . The Heavyweight B class again featured the battle of technologies - Fred Slife r on a leadi ng -link fork , plunger fram e equipped Adler two-stro ke twin versu s Lew Stretc h on a telescopic fork, swi ngarm-equipped 350 Ro yal -Enfield fou r-stroke single. After the first loop, Slifer led with 28 marks to Stretch' s 35 marks. The two riders matched each other mark for mar k on the final two loops, and Slifer claimed victory with Stretch in second place on the day. Jeff Chambers posted low loo p scores from start to finis h to dominate the Lightw eig h t B class on his 250cc BSA. J ohn Towery used .his enduro experience on hi s Trium ph twin to take second place on the first loop with BSA-mounted Ph il Lowe only one mark behi nd in third. Karin grabs Malvern MX laurels By Peggy Adamic M ALVERN, OH,MAR. 29 The Competition Riders O f America opened their 1992 motocross season at Malvern Mota Sport Park, and 322 rid ers were on hand to com pete. Mike Katin walked away in both the 250 and 125cc Expe rt classes. " In the firs t 250cc Expert mot o , Steve Joh nson mot ored into the lead with Kalin, Keith Perry , Gary Stoffer 'and the rest of the rid ers in tow. Katin look over the top spo t on the first lap as J oe Maurer began his jo urn ey to the front of the pa ck. Maurer moved in behind Johnson on lap two. The three riders held their posi tion s as David Ha nd moved in to challe nge Perry for four th. Perry los t control of his Honda and found himself in last p lace. Hand motored in and passed Johnson for third. Kalin scored the win over Maurer with hand on his rear wheel. Johnson a nd Bryan J on es rou nded out the top five. In moto two, Johnson stole the lead off the li ne wit h Shan e Smith , Kalin an d Rand in pursuit. Smi th was quickly sen t pac king as Kali n, Han d and J ack Steele motored ahead of him . Katin too k over the lead on lap two with Hand foll owin g him aro und"Jo hnson. With one lap 10 go , Hand put experience 10 work and passed Kalin like he was sta nding still. Hand held a four-second lead on the younger Kati n at the checkered flag. Johnson, Perry and Smith foll owed the duo. Kalin earned the overa ll win in the 125cc A class with 2·1 mota finishes. Matt Ca ttari n put his Kawasaki in to the lead to begin moto one with Marcu s Sellards an d Chad Coon beh ind. Sella rds q uick ly dispensed of Cattarin as Kalin began to mo ve from his seventh place start. Sellards began to pull away from the competitors behind as he bu il t up a better than 10-second lead by rnoto end. Katin turned up the throttle and motored around the riders ahead, to second p lace. Coo n, Vince Karno w, and J eff McCune ro unded ou t the top five. Katin controlled the lead at the star t in rno to two with Sellards, Coo n and McCu ne behind. Sellards fell victim to the rai n-da mpe ned track conditio ns and allo wed Kali n to pull ou t a commandi ng lead. Kalin scored the win with a seven-second lead ahead of Coon. McCune
