L ike I sai d, we are going to be making some cha nges in di rt track racing beca use we are tryin g to improve the show a nd bu ild the series. T hey are a traditio na l-minded people, a nd so me of th e cha nges they probab ly aren ' t go ing to lik e. Can you give us a hint as to some of those changes? No. Not right now. Is a G rand Prix or World Superbike ro und in the U.S. important to ·the AMA? O r are they better off without it? Quite frankly, I don 't th ink it affects the AMA much one way or the other. The AMA is the U.S. representative of the FIM , so from that sta ndpoint it 's up to us to try and get a GP in this country. The o ther sid e of that , of co urse, is th at U.S. prom ot ers, no matter what show they bring in , have got to make some money. The current GP formul a won 't allow them to do tha t. They can 't get the kinds of crowds for a motorcycle ro ad race in this co untry th at they ca n get in Europe. So if the gu y can 't -ma ke a ny money, there's no reason for them to put on the sho w. I th ink it would be good to have a GP here. Absol utely. On the o ther hand, we think we can tak e our o wn series a n d by ge tt ing people inv o lved in it - it's a heck of a show, every bit as good as a GP show. We prob abl y have bett er racing. They can ge t close to the riders, to the bik es. From the spectator's stand poin t, AMA Na tional s are a bett er deal. It reall y is. Fro m a promoter's sta ndpoint, an AMA Nat ion al is a bett er deal because he ca n ma ke mo ney a nd tha t's wh y he's in busin ess. What about the AMA Pro Stickers that caused such an uproar at Daytona last year with Ken n y Roberts. Is that an issue anymore? No. I wasn 't here th en , but I think tha t was just a personality con flict. It could ha ve been wo rked ou t if it had been appro ached properly . .Everybody runs an AMA sticker. The AMA owns th e number p la te, and that's wh ere they were o n the Rob erts bikes, or the Rainey team bikes. It' s just th at it has to be o n the bike; we don 't tell them where to put it. If yo u look at th e bik es, they're all over. The mot ocro ssers put th em o n th e swingarms, they're o n the bod ywork and var ious pl aces o n the road racers. What purpose do those stickers serve? They just promo te the AMA a little. You don ' t see a NASCAR car without a NASCAR sticker, o r a CART car wi thou t a CART sticker, or a n NHRA car without an NHRA sticker. We sanc tio n the race and part of the deal is you p ut our stic ker on your bike. The thing with Rob ert s worked out very ni cely. We were very happy to have th em back a nd raci ng with us a t Daytona. I think everybo dy was happy with th e way th ings went down a t . Dayton a. T he Rain ey tea m was happy a nd we were happy. Another co mplaint, especially from the dirt track community, is that they are no longer able to collect purse money or checks at the race track. Will this practice con tin ue? There are two or th ree reasons behind tha t. T he o ne tha t reall y co unts is tha t the AMA ha s been to ld by its board of tru stees, by its a uditors, that they are not going to have a lot of cash a t the races. T herefore, they are not goi ng to ha ve a lo t of cash at the races . There's nothing we ca n do abo ut tha t. It 's across th e boa rd , but the only o nes wh o hav e co m p la ined abo ut it have been dirt trackers. In tod ay's world, almost everybo dy has a piece
