Rand stars at MoreIands MX By Rick Lyn ch Sf ANT ON, Mi, MAR. 21 The snow-eovered ground at Mor elands MX Park proved no prob lem for Suzuki's G regory Rand, as he perf ormed flawlessl y .at. ~e Michigan Motorcycle Dealers Assoaauon s sttond Silverd om e qualifier. The multi-sponsored Ran d stole thr ee of four holeshots in the 125cc junior and 125cc B classes. Rand went on to win all four motos with the nearest competi tor mo re tha n a hal f a lap behind at the checkered flag . The holeshot anist of the day proved to be j ohn Grewe in the Plus 25 and 125cc A classes. . Grewe grabbed all four holeshots and battled Bigelow brothers Kreg a nd Kip before scori ng the overall with a 2-1 finish. In the first 125cc A moto, Grewe led from slaf t to finish with Brad Kress sttond. Gre we"s final holeshot was shon -lived, as he fell in O. a slick lwn on lap lW Grewe worked h is way pas t Dave Roes for second, but was una ble to get close to the fleein g Kress. Curry sloshes to Portland MX win By Rick Lynch POR11.AND, MI, MAR. 22 j eff Curry slid through the snow , mud and slosh to score the 125 and 250cc A class wins at the Portland Trailblazers-promoted motocross, held a t Ponlan d MX Pa rk. Adam Martin stole the first 125cc A molO ho leshot, but j ohn Grewe quickly ~ook over with Curry in tow. Gr ewe threw Ius sloppy roost on Curry un til he we:n l down and was out for the day. On ce a hea d Cu rry went on for the win. The final saw Bob Mu gan get the holeshot with Curry just behind. Mugan hung close with Cu rry for the first few lap s bu t once agai n, Curry was on to the checkered flag an d the win. T he first 250cc A moto saw Curry wit h the holeshot, with close , compa ny fr~m Allen H orne. Horne swap ped th e lead WIth Curry through the ro ughen ing tra ck. By the mo to's end Curry had taken the lead when H orne wenl down in on e of the: rear com ers. Home got back up in time to finis h second. Horne proved lO be in the action th rou!;hout the final. H orn e dominated the final Wtth Curry eati ng the mud from his s~per roost un til the final lap, when H orne got In troub.le , in the sli ppery rear sectio n again. Horne again finis hed second and sttond overall, and Curry scored another win ; hi s founh of the day. jim Wern er had a demanding da y in the 125 and 250cc classes. Werner stole the first 125cc C holeshot, but got in early trouble and had to work his way back through Richard Samways , Ma u Gustafson and j ason Thome before regaini ng the lead. Werner quickly stole the lead and stayed in fro nL The 250cc races were battles to the end as the track too k its toll on riders and machin es. Wern er stole the opening holeshot with Glen Ward sttond. Ward bauled Wern er for the lead all-molO long with j oe Koonu making it a th reesom e before Werner crossed the fin ish lin e firs t, Ward sttond and Koonu third. The final was on e of the exciters of the da y as jason Thorne nabbed the holeshot with Wern er and Koonu in hi s pocke:t. Thome, Werner and Koo n u exchanged the lead four lim es before it was just Werner and Koonu out front. War ner Wilbourn earned the Plus 30 and Plus 40 honors while T on y Lee thundered to victory in Open Amateur and Enduro racing aboard his H onda XL600. Until th is event, A Place T o Ride MX Par k was a practice-onl y facility, popular among Atlanta-area riders. Said owner j ohn Kriger, " A lot of o ur riders kept asking us to have a race, so we decided to give it a try. We'll probably do th is once every three months or so." Some of the day's fiercest racing came in the Beg inners d Ivis io n wh er e Mik e J ell emerged viclorio us via his 2·1 score. Frnt· moto winner Allan Goldstein got hung up in the gale at the stan of malo two but lurned his last-p lace slaf t into an eighth-p lace finish. " I rode my heart out," said Goldstein, " But it was worth it becaus e I got third overall." Run ner-u p gol d went to j osh Hirsl. Mickey Anthony led the opening 125cC C malO from st.art lO fin ish , but a crash while leadi ng the second molO put him out of con ten tion. Bates recovered to finish sixth in the molO and third overall. The class winner was finally determined with a winnerta ke-a ll late seco nd-mo lO batde between Sta n ley's brother, Randy H yde, and Tim Caviness. Cavi ness got by for the win an d the overall.
