BLOC LEVENTS A e Anthony Pa ggio (247) and Jim Neese (314) fought for the lead at the start of a 125cc A moto at Devil's Ridge. Brian McElroy (h idden) won bo th motos, Travis Pastrana (17) and Chris Clarkson went elbo w-to-elbow at Devil's Ridge. . Matt Boone came back from a firs t moto DNF, 10 ta ke th ird in moto two but was still out of th e top five overall. The ra ce action in the 65cc 7-11 year-old class look ed more li ke p ro ac tion as Aaron Li nsey wa s able to sh u t down J oshua Su mney's fir st moto wi n to score th e seco nd rno to win and the overall. The' firs t rnoto saw a th ree-way battle between Lindsey, Su m mey a nd Allen McLaugh lin. After ea rly mot o passing, Su m mey was able to wo rk into first p lace by th e halfway point an d Li ndsey fell back all the way to fifth . McLaugh li n h it the grou n d on lap five a nd su ££ered a DNF a nd Lindsey got himself back toge the r and worked back into second befor e th e fini sh. Summey earned the mo to wi n over L i n dsey , Ca sey Barn es, Bryan Weat herly a nd Chris Wells. Paggi o was th ird , ahea d of Andrews. Patrick Slate turned in two fifth place fi nishes for fif th overa ll. Steve Starnes wiped out the Pl u s 30 cla ss in both motos a nd al so won th e ove rall in the Plus 25 class. International Drag Bike Association SouthWest Nationals Klemme conquers SouthWest Nationals By Bad Caraway ENNIS, TX, MAR. 29 owan J oe Klemm e scored the win in th e Super Gas final at th e International Drag Bike Association 's SouthWest Nat ion als , held a t the Texas Motorplex. After two days of brisk and blustery Texas weather, the decision was made midway through Sunday eli m inations to shorten the raci ng distan ce from 1/ 4 mile to 1/8 mil e, du e to gu sting winds. After q ua lifying 11th fastest, Klemme u til ized quick rea tion times to advance through the semi-fina ls, selli ng up a one -pass showdo wn between h im seI£ an d Schneider, the 1990 Super Gas champ. T he pre-race prediction had come true. In th e championshi p ru n , Schneider was too a n xious a n d red- lighted, handing Klemme his first title of the 1992 season. The Pro Stock Eliminator class is always high ly competitive, an d the South West Na tionals field was no differen t, Defen din g 1991 Event Champ ion H arry Lartigue knew it woul d take quick reaction times to win the eliminations, especially with the final race bei ng run on the shorter 1/8 mile track. After qualifying 14th fastest, Lartigue fought through the pack to face Ron Ayers in the Finals. Ayers qualified fastest and was poised to take th e title. In Final Eli mi nations, though , Lartigue posted a .447 second re action time an d strea ked to h is secon d Sou th West title over a dejected Ayers. In Bryan Ben nett 's first appearance aboard a new Kawasaki Ni nja, he won the Pro Comp class on a bike that had never been raced. Both Bennett and his final s competitor, J on Minonno, had to overc ome stiff cha lle nges from veteran racers to adva nce to th eir meeting in the championshi p pass. Running on a windy 1/8 mil e track in th e Final s, Bennett po sted a reaction time of .489 seconds and speed of 136.57 mph to tak e the win. Min onno brok e in th e fin al s to end the weekend as runner-up bu t clocked a leading .474 reaction. Competing for the first time in Top . Fuel/Funny Bike Eliminator, Marshal l Farr won h is in itial ou ting with a reaction time of .633 seconds and a top speed of 170.45 mph. For both Bennett and Farr, breaking new ground yielded spectacu lar results. The H eads- Up Eliminator saw some old familiar faces in final eliminations as well as some newcomers, with everyone struggling with the windy conditions. In Super Cornp, racer Bob Morrison mo ved up from Pro Gas, after winning th e PROSTAR numberone plate for 1991, and 'was simply hoping to run well and get the feel of the new bracket. After qualifying seven th fastest, Morrison advanced to the finals - defeating Michael Phillips for the titl e. In Pro Gas, Doug Barr ett posted his first IDBA win , ov er coming JeH Schilder, wh ose ru n ner-up positi on ' was hi s best fin ish in a Nat ion al event.
