Keener, aboard a mac hine he borrowed from th reetim e Grand National Champion Jay Sp ring- . steen, captured th e win in th e Seni or (Plus40 ) clas s. "I haven't raced in 12 years, but as soon as th e light turned green it all came hack," said Keener. Dan Craw£ord scored a runaway win in the first of two heats, while Keener emerged victorio us in th e second after a brief battl e with Kei th O 'Bo yle. In the final. Crawford had th e fas test cl utch hand and grabbed th e hol eshot ahea d of John FIeser and Keener . By th e tim e they hit turn two, Keener had wicked up th e throt tle and squeezed between th e TWO riders , Crawford held the lead for th e next two laps, before Keener reeled him in and slid past for the lead. With no one in . his way, Keener twisted th e throttle and for th e next six laps, slid gracefully around th e track to score the win. Crawford settled for second, ahead of J im Bauerle and Leroy Sebert. Crawford returned in the Open class and scored the win in the first heat race. Craig Pickett topped Jo hn Lowe in the second heal, and the stage was set for the final. Craw ford stole the holeshot and led Picket around the track. Pickett picked up the pace and fou nd his way past on lap TWO . Shortly after Pickett ma de his way pas t, Tim Farre ll also dis placed Cra wford. As PIckett began to p ull away, Crawford dropped even further off the pace but managed to ha ng o nto th ird . P ickett scored the win ahea d of Farrell an d Crawford. Kawasakis dom inated the 250cc A class, as KX·mounted Brad Lo we and Je ff Fredett e romped away with the firs t and second heat race wins, respectively. In th e final , Fredette and Brad ley O'Boyie were sent to the pena lty line for j u mping the stan. Fredette's lu ck turned worse as he went do wn o n the first la p and remou nted in las t place. Curtis S ta pert assu med co ntrol of the lead , while Mike So laski gave chase. Fredette rode like a madman after his spill, a nd caug ht the two fro nt -runners at th e halfway point, Fredette managed to overta ke Solaski on the last lap, but a las t lap sprint by Stapen foiled Frede tte 's attempt to win. Svardvik scores double win at LACR • • • • • • • • By David Procida PALMDALE, CA , JAN. 26 Sweden 's Anders Svardvik cam e to America , like so man) ' o ther Europea ns, to learn how to go faster. Svardvik learn ed quickly, as he scored the 125 and 250ccIntermedia te class wins a t th e Cal ifornia Ra cing Club-promoted mo tocross at Los Angel es County Raceway. In th e first 250cc moeo, J ason Simons got the holesh ot leadin~ Svard vik and T erry Parsons through the first turn. Svardvik passed Simons o n lap one, and Parsons also got by a lap later. Simons cruised in th e number three sia l, whil e Jos h Wagner, Bremenour and Jack Kell had a three-rider di ce going for fourth. On th e last lap Parso ns took the lead and th e win. The pair were followed by Simmons , . Wagner, Ray Bremenour and KelI. In mo ta two, Svardvik stormed back with a vengeance arid scored the moto win ahead of Parson s. Simmons, Wagner and Bremenour, Sva rdvik wa s awarded the overa ll, while Parsons was Iorced to settle lor second. In the first 125cc In term edia te class mot a , Par sons ripped orr the line an d scored a wir eto- wire win. Finishing close behind were Svardvik, Simmons, and Tracy Asher. Just as he did in the 250cc class, Svardvik stormed back in the concluding 125cc mo ta and notched the mot a and overall wins. Parsons was once again forced to settl e for second overa ll.
