Weinert has more guts. determina tion and class in his pinky than those two com bined will ever ha ve. WBPA 4 FAX (404) 934-3112 GP snafu T he silence of th e lambs? What's th e deal? It's been a month now since th e news o f Laguna Seca 's GP demise: Two or three letters in Voices have been aired , but Cycle N ews, asi de fro m printing th e basi c fac ts , h as been noticeab ly silent. Does th e Big Bad Wolf (Ecclestone, Doma, Roberts , etc.) intimidate th e press as well as th e FIM? Come on, a ll you su p po sedly insightful, probing. hard hitting moto -journal ists, where's your courage? Spea k up! H ow abo u t a ni ce in-dep th interview with the King? Or is he no longe r holdin g court? Wh at a joke! T om Ban non Palm Desert, CA As of today, January 27, the w orld is still awaiting a contract to be signed by the FIM w hic h w ould give all but lotal control of GP road racin g to th e Ecclestone-led grou p. The wo rld is also awaiting a GP schedule. We've print ed much, much more than th e " basic facts." In fact, for months we 've .publish ed com p rehe nsive reports on the su bject - and w e m ean the most com prehensive available an yhere, in any language. We'll editorialize on the su bject when the transfer of power i5 completed. If you can 't waif a w eei or so, here's a sample of what you can expect from this comer: Grand Prix road racing is not a sport 10 those uiho run it, it' s a big business - a uer» profitable big business. Those who ar~ about to take control of it have oru dominant desire, to see it become an ev,n more profitable business, and they don 't part icularly care how that's accomplish ed . . . Editor. Teamwork prevails T he response we received from the le t ter about land closures in the Keysto ne State (Voices , Dec. 18 issue) was , to say the least, overwhelming. We never im agined that there were that many off-ro ad enth usiasts who cared enough to co me ou t in th e sub-freezing temperature to p ick up litter and large trash in th eir favorite riding area T ower City, Pennsylvania. Without wast ing spoke, I'll get right to the numbers. We a n ticipa ted 50 to 75 people, in stead we had over 400 participants. They co llected an estimated 34 tons of litter, household refuse, furniture a nd appliances, and eigh t tons of tir es. Over 20 clu bs were rep resent ed from a three-state region a nd more than a dozen motorcycle and ATV dealers a nd off-road accessory shops joined in to make this event a success. T o further show ou r appreciation, we donated over $500 to the Joliett Fir e Depart ment, along with an inscribed plaque which will be on display at the fire house. Mere words ca n no t ex p ress our gratitude and th ank s, but we will try. The Pennsylvania Trail Riders Association would like to thank Cycle N ews for publishing th e letter which many peopl e read; Ron Li ckman from th e G a rrell Group for providing the dumpsters a nd th e coopera tion; all th e deal ers a nd accessory sho ps for getting th e word ' out and th en participating th ems elves; all th e enth usiastic motorcycle, ATV a nd dune bu ggy clubs; and ultimatel y, a ll th e co ncerne d m en , women and ch ildren wh o chose to mak e a sacr ifice for a spo rt th ey love. T han k you a ll. Our goal was to represent o urselves as responsible, respe ctabl e and appreciati ve. We may have won this battle, but th ere is st ill much more work to be done for this sport. The bottom line is th is: T he " I" word is meaningless; teamwork always pr evails. Ted Witmer Pennsylvania T rail Riders Assoc. York, PA unCI'S to the editor should be sent to: Voices. eyck Nt:Ws P.O . Bo x 498, Long Bea ch, CA , 90801-0498. Published Ieu ers do n o l necessarily refl ect the position of Cycle News, Inc. Letters should not exceed 200 words and a ll leners are su bject to editing.
