Danny Hamel (Kaw) completed a busy weekend by scoring the overall wi n at the opening round of the AMA National Championship Hare & Hound Series, hel d in Lucerne Valley, California, on Sunday, January 26. Hamel is the defending series champ. Paul Krause (Kaw) finished second overall, while Larry Roes e ie r made it a Kawasaki 1-2·3 sweep by finishing third overall. National Speed Sport News, the , weekly auto racing new spaper, reports that NASCA R racer K yle Petty gave his father, stock car racing legend Richard Petty, a Harley-Davidson as a Christmas present, e Scott Plessinger (KTM) won the opening ro und of the AMA National Championship Hare Scrambles Series at Atlanta, Texas, January 26. Former series champ P lessinger a nd defending champ Scott Summers (Ho n) approached the finis h line in a virtual tie, but Summers got tangled up with a grapevine and crashed. He recovered to finish ' second. Steve M cSwain was third. Ezra Lusk (Suz ) topped Ronnie T ichenor (Suz ) and Barry Carsten (Suz) in the 125cc Pro class at round five of the Winter AMA Series, held in Gainesville, Florida, January 26. T immy Ferry (Kaw) was the 250cc Pro winner, ahead ' of Jeff Curry (Kaw ) and Ross Pederson (Suz). The 1992 Honda r oa d race contingency program will total almost $460,000, with more than a q uarter million dollars posted for riders of the CBR900 R R. The program covers events for riders of the Honda RC30, CBR600F2 and VFR750F, in addition to the CBR900 RR. Most major road race series in the U.S. are covered. CBR900 RR riders wh o com pete in AMAlCCS , WERA a nd selected clu b 900cc class races wiiI be paid co ntingency money for first through seven th place fin ishes. A CBR900RR-only race will be held a t the AMAlCCS Ra ce of Champions m ee t at Da yton a i n October, with no less than $20,000 posted and payouts back to 20th place. A fire during the early morning hours of January 20 damaged 45,000 s~uare feet of the 250,000 square foot Bieffe helmet production facil ity in Lucca, Italy. According to the Italian helmet manufacturer, a possible delay of four to six weeks in the production of thermoplastic shells is to be expected. The 2nd Annual Back To The Beach R eunion will be held at the North Turn Restaurant in Ponce Inlet, Florida, on Tuesday, March 3. The restaurant, which overlooks the actual site of the old Daytona beach course, is located at 451 1 S. Atlantic Avenue. Former Da yto na 200 winners Ed Kretz Sr., Dick Kla mfoth, Bobby Hill and Don and Floyd Emde were among those who attended last year's reunion. Festivities will begin at I I a.m. and anyone who raced on the old beach course or who wo uld li ke to meet plenty of former racin g grea ts is invited. Kirk was the only full-time female competitor in the stock car racing series. The Indiana Motor c y cle Expo will take place Febru ary 1-2 a t the Murat Shrine Temple in Indianapolis. Over 30 exhibitors are expected, including manufacturers, dealers, clubs, race promoters and special interest groups. Expo hours will be 10 a.m . to 9 p .m, on Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Motocrosser Ron Lechie n , the 1985 125cc National Champion , was released from the Tuf Racing/Ford Remanu fact ured Parts team following the January II Camel Supercross Series opener in Orlando, Florida. "They (Tuf) said that they couldn 't help me anymore, so I'm out of a ride," said Lechien, who failed to qualify for the main event at Orlando. Tuf owner Dave Antolak said he released Lechien because "he doesn 't seem to care about anythi ng." Lech ien says he's not sure what he 'll do in the fu ture, but indicated that he may pursue a ride in Europe. T u f Racing /Ford Rem a nufactu red Parts rid er Todd DeHoop missed the Ja n uar y 18 H ouston Su percross because he was in Austria where he won a " hardcross" event (supercross held o n co ncre te or wooden a rena floors, with wooden jumps). " H e was offered a lot more money than he could've made in Houston, so I had to le t him go," said Tuf's Dave Antolak. Motocrosser Keith Bowen is headed to Europe to contest the World Championship 500cc MX Series for Bicross , an Italian Kawasaki dealer. Brad Burrows of Holland, Michigan, was the grand prize winner in the 1991 AMA /Suzuki National Dual Sport Trail Ride Seri es sweepstakes contest. Burrows will receive a Suzuki DR350, donated by American Suzuki. Burrows' entry in the Michigan 300 round of the serie s earned him the top prize. . Dealemews magazine will debut a redesign and new logo at the Dealernews Motorcycle Expo in Cincinnati, February 22-24. "The complete redesign and logo change is a natural evolu tion beginning with the editorial changes we've been working on in the pas t year," said John M urph y , pub lisher of the monthly trade pub lication. Team Suzuki's Ste ve Lamson underwent surgery on J anuary 22 to repair the broken left thigh (fem ur) bone tha t he sustained a t the January 18 Houston Supercross. The star ting area for the March 5 Alligato r Enduro, a traditional feature of Daytona Cycle Week, has been moved approximately 30 miles from its former starting area near Daytona International Speedway. Highway construction, land closure and some uncooperative people have put an end to its starting next to the speedway. The Daytona Dirt Riders Association-hos ted enduro will begin at a location which is 7 miles nort h of R t. 40 on State Rt. II. Deta iled directions are provided with the entry blank which is available from Len Puckett, 772 Horsem man Dr., Po rt Orange, FL 32127. P re-entry is $30; post-entry $40. Sign-up will be conducted the day prior to the event just east of the speedway tunnel. The Daytona Dirt Riders Association will also host the ina ugural Alligator Dual Sport Ride. Sign -u p for that event will be conducted along wi th th e enduro on Wednesday, March 5, a t a site just east of the speedway tu nnel. The 130 mile ride incl udes dirt and secondary paved roads, p lus a ferry ride. It will start at Dayto na Munici pal Stadium a nd the finish is on R L II at the Florida Wildlife Management Area. Due to a scheduling con flict a t ESP N, the television broadcast of the 1991 Suzuki National Cup Series Final has been changed to Sa turday, February 22 at 4:30 p.m. Pacific timel7:30 p.m. Eastern time. ESPN will begin telecasting taped! edited coverage of the Camel Supercros s Series on Thursday, March 26, a t 9:30 p.m. Pacific time. The Orlando Supercross, the opening round of the series, will be the subject of the first h our-long show, and subsequent rounds, with the exception of the Daytona Supercross, will be telecast on a weekIy basis at the same time each Thursday through July 2. Three-time World Champion Fred die Spencer and his Two Bro ther Racing-backed H o nda RC30 circu lated under the official lap record a Daytona International Speedway dur ing Honda testi ng on January 25-26 Spencer clocked a one-minute, 52.42 second lap near the end of Sunday' session as h is testing for the March S Da ytona 200 co ncl uded. World Super bike Champion Doug Pol en set the official lap record wi th a 1:53.638 second lap in March of 1991, but hi, unoffical record (set d uring Dunlop tire tests in November) is 1:49.40. Johnny O'Mara was a no show at the Anaheim Su percross - at least as a competitor.
