"The FIM would never all ow it. It's good, though, racing on this makes us stronger and faster." In the opening 250cc Pro moto, Vohland went down in the first turn an d remounted last. Mu ch to the delight of th e spectators on hand, Vohland opened the throttle on his T eam Car pi Suzuki/ AXO / Renthall Scott / Motul/ Technosel/ D.I. D backed RM an d passed 29 riders in 10 la ps to not ch the firs t moto wi n. Vohla nd snatched the win from race leader Italian Massim iliano Gazzarata on the last lap. Scott Myers rode a strong race for thi rd, with Rodney Smi th and Ray Crumb ro u nd ing out th e top five. Smith 's firs t moto perfo rma nce ca me a t a p rice, as h e was seen weld ing his frame ba ck to geth er in betwee n m o tos, A tired bu t happy Vohland said, "I grabbed too much front brake in th e first turn and went down, then I just . . used good lin e choices to move up. " Moto two was a Vohl and runaway. Cru mb led briefly, bu t Voh land would not be den ied and stormed hom e the winner over Crumb, Roy Snellingen, and a hard charging Massimiliano. Norwegian Snellingen had the hot clutch hand in the first 125ccPro moto, just ahead of Smith and Vohland. Vohland shot past Smith, and made quick work of Snellingen for the lead. Former 125 and 250cc World Champion John Van den Berk could get no higher than third, with Smith a solid second and Crumb fourth. Vohland capped off h is day with a final romp in the last moto. Crumb held the initial lead , ahe ad of Smith . and Vohland. Smith passed Crumb, only to case it hard on a step-up ju mp, and collided with Crumb before go ing down. Vohland sailed past th e two for the lead which h e would n ever relinquish. "I learned my lesson in supercross, never follow directly behind two guys that are dicing for the lead ," said Vohland. "That's how you find yourself on the ground." .Sm ith and Crumb recovered to fin ish second and third, with Van den Berk a lonely fourth. Vohland was all smiles as he took the checkered. At the start of th e first 500cc Pro moto, Mervyn Anstie roosted in to the lead, just ahead of 1991 Vet Champion Rex Staten. Steve Drew was having a good moto running third until he lost it on a steep jump, taking Rich T aylor and Brian Vargas out in the process. All three were able to remount, bu t were several laps down. Up front, Anstie held on to a slim lead ov er Staten , with Dan Berg holding th ird just ah ead of Dre y Dircks. Carlo Hulsen was on th e gas after a poor start, and displaced Dir cks for fourth and closed the ga p on Berg. Hulsen watched Berg's lines for only a moment, as he zipped by. Soon after, Hulsen's next victim was Ans tie,who bobbled entering a turn. Staten 's ride came to an abrupt end as he landed short over the big table top, a nd . snapped his rear shock in two. "This is the th ird rear shoc k I've busted," said Staten. " We keep rebuilding it, and I keep breaking it." As Staten fell back, Hulsen took over> and said goodbye. H u lsen scored the win over Berg, who had nipped Anstie at the finish. "This was a tough win for me," said Hulsen. " T h is wind makes these 1992 GAIN ESVI LLE.
