Lauman slips to Hatfield Ice Race win By Steve Meikle HATIlELD, WI, JAN. 5 Mike Lat tma n smoked th e Open Pro class at the Central Wisco nsin Ice Ra cing Association's 1992 season points opener, a recor d n umber of entries showed up at th e Lake Arb ut us venue. Clill Eckes launched a we ll- execu ted ho leshot in the Open P ro class , only to have Lauma n slip into the fron t spot-while exiting corner two. Lauman held on to the lead until th e end, wh ile Eckes had to co nten d with repea ted attacks fro m Bob Kohner for th e second spot. Koh ner managed to pus h ahea d of Eckes severa l tim es, but Eckes would not give in and fended 011 o ne last charge by Ko h ner to ta ke second, leaving Koh ner in third. The second mo to saw Eckes gra b another holeshot. This time, Eckes held on to th e lead wh ile Lattman played catch -u p. La ttman slo wly reeled Eckes in , and in corner th ree on the white flag lap, Eckes hoo ked a gr oo ve and allo wed La ttman and Tony Kohner to slide by. As th e ga le fell . for the fir st mo ta , it was T ony Amara dio way ou t in front of the field . Youn g was second, just ahea d of Derek Na tvig and Rob Sirosky. Young q uickly caught the back end of Amarad io , and th e two rid ers sped away from the rest of the field . T he pace they set was fast, and before th e hallway poi n t in th e mota they began weaving th ro ugh slower riders. La p ped n ders gave Amarad io problem s, an d two laps fro m the fin ish Young shot by Am aradio for th e lead. Amarad io na iled the ho leshot in rnoto two , with Young clos e behi nd. The race began to look like a carbo n copy of the first. bu t this time Amarad io was able to keep a clear advantage over Young. Ch andler went unchallenged for the Iro nman award, as he gra bbed the holeshot aboard his Yam aha YZ250 and rode the remain der of th e race un chall enged.
