Lauman slips to Hatfield Ice Race win By Steve Meikle HATIlELD, WI, JAN. 5 Mike Lat tma n smoked th e Open Pro class at the Central Wisco nsin Ice Ra cing Association's 1992 season points opener, a recor d n umber of entries showed up at th e Lake Arb ut us venue. Clill Eckes launched a we ll- execu ted ho leshot in the Open P ro class , only to have Lauma n slip into the fron t spot-while exiting corner two. Lauman held on to the lead until th e end, wh ile Eckes had to co nten d with repea ted attacks fro m Bob Kohner for th e second spot. Koh ner managed to pus h ahea d of Eckes severa l tim es, but Eckes would not give in and fended 011 o ne last charge by Ko h ner to ta ke second, leaving Koh ner in third. The second mo to saw Eckes gra b another holeshot. This time, Eckes held on to th e lead wh ile Lattman played catch -u p. La ttman slo wly reeled Eckes in , and in corner th ree on the white flag lap, Eckes hoo ked a gr oo ve and allo wed La ttman and Tony Kohner to slide by. Lauman sco red the o verall win , and Eckes held on to second o verall . The 250cc Pro cla ss saw Came l Pro dirt tra cker Davey Durelle u p against some still competitio n . Durelle worked his way around the pack at the star t an d found himself in front wi th Eckes no t far behind. Young grabs gold at Carlsbad MX By Da ve Burgess CARLSBAD,CA, DEC 28 Fox Racing/ Pro Circuit/Shoei-backed Ch ris Young scored the top money in the 250cc Pro cla ss a t the Racing Enterpnses Sat urday MX at Carl sbad Raceway. As th e ga le fell . for the fir st mo ta , it was T ony Amara dio way ou t in front of the field . Youn g was second, just ahea d of Derek Na tvig and Rob Sirosky. Young q uickly caught the back end of Amarad io , and th e two rid ers sped away from the rest of the field . T he pace they set was fast, and before th e hallway poi n t in th e mota they began weaving th ro ugh slower riders. La p ped n ders gave Amarad io problem s, an d two laps fro m the fin ish Young shot by Am aradio for th e lead. Amarad io na iled the ho leshot in rnoto two , with Young clos e behi nd. The race began to look like a carbo n copy of the first. bu t this time Amarad io was able to keep a clear advantage over Young. Amaradio , Young and 500cc Intermedia te Robert Fail ing went into a turn wh ere there was only room for o ne rider, and it was Young emerg ing with the lead and the mo to wi n. Action and con tro versy started in th e first heat race of the nigh t. Brown made th e best sta rt, while Diem a nd Mo nnel tangled a nd cras hed at the start of th e race . T he referee called for a co mp lete restart . Brown aga in mad e the gate with Diem i n second p lace. This order remain ed until Diem took a shot at Brow n on th e last lap, w hich sent bot h rid ers tumbling in to the cras h wall. The referee brough t o ut the red flag and deemed Diem the cause. . Rid ers ,earned poin ts aft er p lacin g in each . heat, after 16 hea ts, poi nts are tabu lat ed. Chandler charges to San Jose Endurothon win By Bill Spence r SAN JOSE, CA, DEC H Do ug Chand ler took a break from the highspeed world of European road racing and captured th e overa ll win at round two of the 2-Hour Endu rothon Series, held a t the Sa n Jose Fairgrounds Speedway . Chandl er com. pleted 30 laps o n the 1.8 mi le scra mbles track th a t wou nd thro ugh the speedway. Ch andler went unchallenged for the Iro nman award, as he gra bbed the holeshot aboard his Yam aha YZ250 and rode the remain der of th e race un chall enged. T he on ly rid er that stayed on the lead lap was T eam Harl eyDavidson 's 600<;c Nationa l.Dirt Track cham p, Chris Carr. Suzuki RM 250-mo unt ed Carr ga ted seco nd, but cou ld no t ma tch th e pa ce set by Chand ler. Mark Smith team ed wi th Danny Malf atti, and despite a cra sh by Ma lfaui, won th e Expert Enduro T eam cla ss just in front of Rod Lak e and Andy Tressor . Ed Soper teamed with Chris Mitch ell for th e next spot and first in Sportsman End uro team trophy spots , whi le Todd Damro n was th ird Expert a nd Steve Ra ndazzo tops in the Vet Expert class. Steve and T im Alarcon were th ird in the Expert Team over Bill Fagund es and Keith Day, wit h filth Ex pert T eam to Joe Pi neda a nd Aaron Hill. Rod Spencer was on ce again on top of the overall Open class, but decid ed to ride lr o nman for this win wit h Rob Damron switchin g to th e Open class.
