Fowler, Paladino dean house at Sandhill opener By Tom Prichard BRENTWOOD, CA, DEC. 29 err y Fowler made the long trip from sou thern California pa yoff, as he scored the overall win in the 250cc Pro class and fin ished second in the 125cc division. Danny Paladino proved to be the only rider to top Fowler on the day, as he nai led the overall honors in th e hotly cont ested l25cc Pro class. Mor e than 475 riders turned ou t for . the north ern California opening . round of the CFI North/South Showdown Series at Sandhill Ranch in Brentwood . Wet wea ther co u ld n' t dampen the spirits of the riders and th e rain that 'was predicted held off for mo stof the day . The 125cc Pro class was th e first race to leave th e lin e, and it was Honda rider Ricky Lu tz wh o immediately took th e lead . Lutz, who rode th e fall seri es on a 500, appear ed to be righ t at home o n the smaller bike, as he spen t the first half of the ra ce in the lead. Fow ler seemed to be conten t to follow th e H on da rider for the first four la ps , st udying h is lines. Suzuki rider Steve Ne lso n held third T 16 for much of th e race ,keeping Kawasaki pilot Dan ny Nelso n and Paladino 's Yamaha behind him. J ust pas t the halfway po int the top four started to tighten up, as Fow ler and Palad ino started LO make their moves. By lap five Fowl er had reeled in and pa ssed L utz , and a lap later Paladino did the sam e. Paladino then went afte r Fowler bu t time ran o ut before he was able to mak e a pass. The first rnoto concluded wi th Fowl er taking the win , Paladino second, Lutz third, Steve Nelson fou rth , and Suzuki rider Donald Bisceglin fifth. The start of the second moto was all Paladino. T he Yamaha rider fro m An tioc, Ca liforn ia , timed the gate perfectly and shot up th e hill with a tremen dous holeshot. Canadian Allan Dyck followed Pal adino in seco nd wi th Bisceglin third. Fowler coul d no t find the traction, spinning comi ng off the gate and came around in fifth at the end of lap one. By the halfway point Ch ris Neal had .put hi s Suzu ki into th ird with Fowler in fourth. There was no sto p ping Pal ad ino ' in this Danny Pa ladino (213) led fro m sta rt to finis h to win the second 125cc P ro moto. moto, as he stayed far enoug h ahea d of second-p lace Dyck to have a com. forta ble margin . By the tim e the checkered flag came ou t Paladino took a comma ndi ng win , Dyck hel d o n to fini sh second and Fowl er fi n a ll y m a n aged LO mo ve aro und Nea l for third. T he second moto win put Palad in o at the top of the victory podium wi th second overall going to Fowl er and third to Dyck. By th e ti me the 250cc class li ned up , T erry Fow ler ha d estab lished himself as the ma n to beat o n the day. And when th e gate fell it was aga in Fowler in th e lead . H is lead was short-lived . th is tim e, as Yamaha ride r J on Nelson quickly moved up fro m his th ird pl ace start and too k the lead on lap two. For the first half of the race Nelso n loo ked LOo stro ng for Fow ler LO catch, even man aging LO pu ll out a slight lead by lap four. But again Fow ler studied the rid e in fro nt of h im and fou n d a flaw in Nelson's defens e. On lap five Fowler agai n recaptured . the lead, droppi ng Nelson to second . T he pass by Fowl er seemed to break the conce nt ra tio n of Nelso n, as he was pa ssed a lap later by a hard charging Trevor Meagh er. Meagher had been following Fowl er the entire mo to and put on a last lap charge for the lead . Fow ler realiz ed Meagh er was getting close and turne d it u p o n the last lap to hold o n for the win. Second went to a dejected Meagher and Yam ah a rider Alla n Dyck passed Nelso n on the last lap to take th ird. The start of moto two again saw Fowler take the holesh ot , followed by Pat C ornm, Pat Bennett, Dyck and Nelson, all mounted on Yamahas. The pos itions rema ined un changed for th e first few la ps with the top five never sepa ra ted by mor e tha n a few bike lengths. On lap three Bennett passed Com m and started putting pressure on Fowl er (or the lead . Fowl er appeared LO be riding defensiv ely, protecti ng hi s lin es from Bennett, wh o cou ld no t find a way around the Yam aha sp eedster. T hen sudden ly, on lap six, Comm aga in wicked it up, pa ssing Bennett and pull ing up alongside Fowler. Fo w ler wa s tak en by surprise by C omm, as the you ngster from Freemont flew by for the lead on the fast sweeping front strai gh t. Fow ler tried to regroup but tim e ran o ut before he co uld find a way aro und to reta ke the lead. T he checkered flag waved for a j ubi lant C om m, with Fowl er second, Bennett th ird, Dyck fo ur th and Donal d Bisceglin fifth .
