Although the 62&c kit comes with all the necessary hardware (excep t for tools, of course) to complete the job, Ogilvie recommends a few aftermarket parts to enhance the package, such as swapping the stock muffler for a Super Trapp aluminum muffler, and the stock air filter for a K&:N filter. Both of these products were fitted on our XR. Ogilvie claims that the addition of the Super Trapp muffler and the K&N filter increases horsepower even more. However, if noise is a concern in your area, then the quieter stock muffler should be left alone. In Mexico , noise is usually not a factor. A large variety of jets are included in the kit, For the Baja 1000 race, our Honda was richened throughout the range by switching to a #62 pilot jet, a 162 main jet and lowering the clip on the need le jet one notch. Further modifications were made with the Baja 1000 race in mind. The ignition was beefed up in order to run two 200 watt bulbs in our aftermarket Cibie headlights. Ogilvie manufactured special mounting brackets for quick and easy installation of the headlights during the race. A "dry-break" gas cap setup replaced the stock twist-type cap on the XR's gas tank. The dry-break design enables the use of a quick-fill gas can for fast refueling. Except for new oil , the suspension on our XR was left stock. Last but not least, we painted the front fender black so the headlight's reflection off the stock white plastic wouldn't blind the rider. The first time our XR touched dirt is when the green flag dropped for the start of the Baja 1000 race. We were, to say the least, quite anxious to ride the XR for many reasons. Personally, I was anxious because about a yearand-a-half ago, I had the opportunity to ride Ogilvie's 1988 Bars tow -toVegas-winning XR600 , as well as another one of his more current hop ped-up models. I was amazed, perhaps shocked, by how well they e (Left) Parked outside the Rock & Roll T aco cantina in down town Ensenada, the X11628-kitted Honda is ready for tech inspection the day before the Baja 1000.
