v Letters to the editor 0ICES Keystone State lan d closure 125 a nd 250cc Wo rld Champio nship MX races he ld in Europe. I would like to get this as soon as possible, if you. could help me I sure would be gratefu l! In the heart of central Pen nsylvan ia. o ff-road enthusiasts have enj oyed rid ing on p riva tely ow ned coal land for many years. The area is kn own as Tower Cit y and has an ab u nda nce o f ri di ng opportunities that are hard to equal. . Just like we've read abo ut favorite riding areas open one weekend and closed off th e next , well , this has finall y happened to us. A large parking area has been posted off-limits and is being patrolled by game wardens who will fin e you for trespassing. The original problem, I believe. stems from off-readers spinning donuts and th ro wing stones on the roadway. The stones pose a problem because they puncture the tires of the coal-laden trucks traveling on the road. Now I hear rumors about fist fights between riders and coal miners and game wardens, a stolen bulldozer, and no trespassing sig ns torn from the ground. Is this kind off-road enth usiast in love wi th the sport? Is this the kind of guy who we want to leave a lasting impression on a coa l land owner ? Finally, is this the im age we as offroad enth usiasts want conveyed to the public in gen eral? If you answered no to those three questions, the n you must act fast, It ma y alrea dy be too late for some areas. The Pennsylvania Trail Riders Associa tion (PAT RA ) has been in co n tact with two major coa l co mpa nies in an effort to d ivert impend ing di saster. We will be coordinating cl ea n-u p s in problem areas and along the roadsides which border coal land. Our goal is to represent ourselv es as being resp~m 'sible, respectable. and appreciative. Even th is is little guarantee that th e land will rema in open. If you love ·off-road motorcycl ing, then yo u have a responsibility to keep ou r spo rt a live a nd wel l. Get off your butt, joi n a club a nd becom e active in it. Write letters. mak e phone calls. so licit members and set a good example by being a spo kesperso n for our sport. Loss of th e Tower City riding area will have far-reaching conseq uen ces for riders from New Jersey, Maryland and, o f cou rse, Pennsylvania. Individually, we have litt le power to prevent disaster . . . toge ther we have a cha nce. For more informat ion co ntact T ed Witmer or G inger Bucher at 846 East Bounda ry Ave., York. PA 17403, 717/ 843·5971. I recently had the unique opportunity to participate in the AMA Pro Awards Banquet that was hosted by Dave Despain of MotoWorld and Larry Maiers in Redondo Beach , Cal ifornia. It was truly a great feeling to receive m y award for winning the HarleyDavid son U.S. Twin Sports National Championship in the presence of the best motorcycle racers in the world. The th rill of victory was everyw here; nonetheless, I was experiencing th e agony of defeat, I became so nervous that I co u ld hardly even think straight, It is just a m a zin g that ra cin g a motorcycle at 180 mph does not aro use the emotions, but a simple award cere mon y does . Is it because we are only th e towers of power wi th o u r helmets and leathers on, or maybe because our arch rival competitors will see o u r weak points and use them to their advantage in our next confrontation ? Maybe it 's the fact that we become so ma chine-like to operate these motorcycles with such skill a nd fin esse that we lose contact with our emotio na l feel ings. For me , I really think th at ·it was the presen ce of my peers and ido ls of motorcycle racing.
