For h is efforts, Altmann took home a gift cert ifica te for a new pa ir o f Curnutt shocks. Alt ma n n was al so th e runner up in th e 125cc Expert cla ss. H osted by the Cal ifornia Racin g Club (CRC), the final rou nd o f the American H isto ric Racing Motorcycle Association (AH R MA) West was held F 8 at Los Angeles County Ra ceway after a schedu le change last month, an d the track was basicall y the same special vintage layo ut of the October AH R MA LACR race. ' H igh winds a nd co ld weather prevailed, which dried out the track q uickly, making the surface a bit more choppy than in previous even ts. But the CRC crew did an admirable job of running the races quickly, wh ile keeping water on the race track. More than 170 en tries were filled for the day's event. H e wa s followed closely by La n dus Kent on a 1973 CZ and J.D. Bra m let. Kent usua lly rides o nce a year and is a lways a threat wh en he sh ows u p; th is time, he kept Altma nn under p ressure unti l near the en d o f the race when Altmann was fin ally ab le to get a little brea thing room. Kent circu la ted in second, while Bra mlet faded to a n event ua l sevent h-place fin ish. Clarion Co nstructio n-spo nsored Kelly Owen moved u p to third before mot o's en d and was followed across the line by Vintage Kin g 's Chuck McConnell and Bi ll 's J .B. Cyclery-backed Craig Spurney. . Moto two was nearly a repeat, as Altmann motored his Speed & Sport CZ io its second win o f the day ahead of Kent. This time Bramlet managed to hold on to third place, proving that you really can come to the race track with a bike that doesn' t run and wrench it into shape in time, with a little he lp from your friends. A shakeup in th e top pos itions gave Bramlet third overall with a 7-3 tally. whi le CZ stalwart Jim Keeton was four th in round two for fourth overall. McConnell went 4-6 for fifth . With vintage racing gaining po pula ri ty, the Mod ified classes in the CZ World Championsh ip have dwindled in participa tion over th e past : five years; people are buildi ng bikes to run in th e stock classes, so th ey can race a ll seaso n in AH R MA co mpeti tion. Wh at was onc e the prestige clas s is now a pl ace to run CZ-powered oddities once a year. Among th e bikes attendin g were a CZ-engined 1987 H onda CR and a 1982 Yamaha YZ-chassised CZ 250 com plete wi th handmade wat er-cooled to p-en d. Bu t the 250cc winner this year wa s T ony Sul ek , riding a 1991 CZ 125, while Bill O 'Hara was th e 400cc victor. As usu al , th ere was good racin g among a myriad o f mach in es in th e regular AH R MA classes . The 125cc Experts were led by Ca n-Am rider Brock Su ter, who was m ak in g hi s debu t in the Expert class. Su ter topped bo th mo to s, wh ile Alt ma n n a nd Vintage Iro n's Rick Do u gh ty traded places behind th e leader. Altmann dug a foo tpeg in th e ground in moto one, sp u n out and fell , a llowing Dou gh ty to land seco n d. Ra ce two wa s a different story, as Altman n p ut his Kawa saki firmly into secon d, earning ru n n er- u p honors for th e da y. Robert Li u le was top dog in the 11r id er 125cc Inter m edi ate div isi on , win ni n g both motos o ver Denn is Ivarsson and Blair Risnes. While th e top th ree were rid in g H ondas, Stan Mendell broug ht h is Hodaka home in fou rt h overall. Ka wasa ki o f Simi Valley rider J ohn Lundgren was on th e Bu ltaco in a H o nda sandwich in both 250cc Intermediate motos. Rob ert Little man aged th e win bo th times out aboard h is H o n d a E ls i nore, foll owed b y L undgren and H on da C R250 rider Mike Lillevig. In the 500s, H aase sped away from Lundgren both tim es, whi le Spurney ga ve chase in third.
