Bayle was leading overall after two evenings, but he had to prevent Brad sha w from win ning Saturday's final if he was to retain his King of Bercy crown . Even more importan t Bayle needed to give hi s admirers a race win , but his eveni ng started badl y as he fai led to qualify for th e m ain directly from his heat. Dobb holeshot the first heat and blocked every cha llen ge from Bayle, Bradshaw and LaRocco for half th e race with some dubious tactics in the turns. He had taken Bayle high into the hay bal es on th e fourth lap whi ch pushed the Frenchman back to third, but later in the lap Bayle eliminated himself. Losing control accelerating out of the turn at the end of the tunnel, Bayle rolled into the wall as LaRocco had to work hard to miss him. Bradshaw made a safe pa ss on Dobb through a combination of jumps and went on to win as a dejected Bayle toured back to the pits to prepar e for the LCQ. In th e LCQ he made a nervous start but displayed his true form in the fin al laps after picking his way carefully through the less accomplished opposition until he was in first. Cooper proved that his su spension problems were over by winning heat two. "Stefan Everts ' me chanic Harry Nolte rebuilt my sho ck for me this morning," said Cooper, wh o outpaced the unhappy Stanton. "I wish I knew what's wrong," sai d Stanton. Jeff Ward, having even more problems holding on, crashed out of the race in some stu tter bumps. Stanton finally looked more h is usu al self as he took over the lead from Cooper on the first lap of the ma in, but with in a few laps it was clear that he was still not ready to off er a challenge to Bradshaw and Bayle. Bradshaw ch a rged out of the pack to repeat his qualifier pass, on ly th is time on Stanton, as early as lap two. Bayle was second within another two laps as Cooper crashed downfield. Throughout th e th ree da ys, Bayle looked superior through an obstacle combination leading up to th e finish jump and just bef ore h alf distance ca me the decisive pass on Bradshaw. Once in front, Bayle raced clear of Bradshaw to win by eigh t seconds, even easing up at the end. Stanton was four seconds behind runner-up Bradshaw andcoming under increasing pressure from LaRocco, who had come through from eigh th in impressive style. Cooper charged back past Everts and a disappointing Larry Ward for a distant fifth , and Dobb was again third best European at eigh th place desp ite falling early after a good start-. He was lapped just before th e checkered flag but was under no threat from Kiedrowski, wh o had lost half a lap wh en he crashed. 125cc Support As so often is the case, it was the l25cc cla ss wh ich provided the most hectic action. Fr en ch Nati onal Championsh ip leader Fr ed erick Via lle h ol esho t Thursday's 125cc final and for l4-anda-ha lf laps he sta yed there even th ough compa triot Yves Dema ria had closed to his rear wh eel for th e fin al three laps. Vialle was clearly getting tired and his more experienced rival was p lan ning an assault in the fin al trip through the wh oops, but i t never came to that; at th e corner at the end of the tunnel which takes riders a l m ost outside the stadium, Viall e went down, and, 'alt hough he quickly remounted, the win was gone. H eat winners J eremy McGrat h and Rob Herring never had a chance. The l25cc Western Regional Supercross Champion, McGrath, crashed ou t on the second lap when hol ding fourth p lace, while the Engl ishman, H err ing, dropped quickly down field from a second-p lace start. Always troub led with pumped-up forearms in su perc ross, H erring had also aggravat ed a wrist inju ry in practice and had difficulty holding on after only a few laps. J eff Emig, who had been forced to qualify through the LCQ. was best American in fifth pl ace behind Greg Albertyn and Pedro Tragter, while J ohn Van den Berk was unable to match ยท th e pa ce of the youngsters on his first ride aboard a 125 for several years. Dean Matson, a non-qualifier on th e first even ing, hol eshot Friday's fin al but he could not resist the charges of Demaria and McGrath. Thursday's winner was the first to hit the front, but McGrath was determined the re would not be a secorid successive European win in the class. His challenge ended with both riders lying in the ha y bales at the turn before the whoops and it was McGrath who was quickest to his feet for the win. Matson and Emig went past to complet e an all-American podium ahead of Demaria. Albertyn held third until he crashed out just before half distance. All of th e leading contenders had qual ifi ed for Saturday's fin al and Demaria had the best cha nces of the overall win. It was a remarkable race. Matson aga in led from th e start chase d by Viall e, McGrath and Demaria , bu t within a couple of laps they had all been passed by Herring, wh o proceeded to open up a substantial lead over a tumu lt uo us eigh t-rider pack of Albertyn, Tragter, Em ig and Doug H en ry. Then a t half distance th e inevi table happe ned as H erring wen t down in th e wh oops. Dem aria had alrea dy cras hed down hard a lap earlier and the French challenge was eliminated completely as H enry elbowed Viall e into the bales in a tight turn: Albertyn led for a coupl e of laps but h e co u ldn't res is t th e im mac ul ate McGrath an d on the final lap Emi g blitzed past on the ins ide of the turn before the whoops to finish behind wi nner McG rath an d make it a n American 1-2. Emi g was the only rider to make the top five each eveni ng, but came up one short of McGrath for the overa ll P rince of Bercy crown wh en FIM GP scori ng CN was im pl emented.
