Moto two saw AXO/ Scoll-backed Pinson put his Suzuki into the earl y lead with Humphrey in hot pursuit. Haynes suffered a midpad stan, but had his Tallad""" Cycle! Fun in the sun at Lodi By Margie Siegal LODI, CA, ocr.20 Gary Milewsi wa lked his 1966 T rium ph off the blue groove of th e Lodi short track in central California, grinni ng from ear to ea r. "The tra ck is great. I won my heat. O f cou rse, if I had lost, the uack would be bumpy and slick. .. One day in 1951, Geor~e Lee and several other menobers of the Lodl Cycle Club found an abandoned pi t and th ou gh t it looked a lot like a fla t track o val. T hey bought the land and buill a sho rt trac k in that pit tha t has been graced by such racing gr eats as Joe Leonard, Mert Lawwi II, Dick Man n , Kenn y Roberts, Mert Lawwill . Ch ris Carr and Ji mmy Filice. When George Lee passed away a year and a ha lf ag o, the Lodi Cycle Clu b put on a vinlage race in his ho nor. The race and an exh ibi tio n o f vintage racers wa s a smash h it a nd the club, alo ng wit h Ken H eu ser of Chic ken Ran ch Racing decided to do a bigger a nd bett er repea t. This year 's George Lee Memorial featured a full sla te o f sho rt uack and IT raci ng, a swa p meet , o l ~ racin g newsreels, a conco u rs, and two po ker ru ns. T here were o ver 200 entries in the races a nd 3500 peop le on the grounds, look ing for parts o r ad miring the conco u rs ma chi nery . Racin g wa s sanctioned by AMA District 36 and th e Vin tage Dirt T ra ck Racers Association , m any o f whose mem bers trav elled across the co u n try to participa te. Mike Young quickl y di spersed Ray a nd began moving on Chris Young, showi ng a wh eel a n the ins ide of Chris in th e comers, hopi ng to for ce a mi sta ke. l1'e banle was short-lived. however. as both Yo ungs bumped eac h ot her in the fin ish line double and fel l. This left an openi ng for Ray, who grabbed the lead a nd tried to dista nce himself fro m lhe o lhers. Chris was the first rider u p an d set chase with Mike behi nd him . Mike railed arou nd Chris. alter the infield do u ble a nd bega n selt i n ~ a blistering pa ce. trying to cu t down Ray's Itveseco nd lead. O n the last lap, Mike caught Ray and in the back section put a block pass o n Ray o ver a small double. Bo th- riders hit and Ra y fell , lea ving a clear tra ck fo r Mike Young.
