OCT 27 . j eff Fredett e topped 163 other riders that showed up for th e AMA Distri ct 14 and 15san ctioned enduro held in New Paris, despite the three da ys o f heavy rain that pr eceded it. The event was also th e final round o f th e Grea t Lak es Enduro Series. " It (course co nd itio n) wasn 't as bad as I thought it would be," said Team Green 's Fredette, Riders' M.C., who has hosted th e even t for over ~O years, has a. reputation for keeping th~ riders honest WI~ many checks. Aga in th is year, the rep utauon was sustained with 13 timed checks and five o.b.'s. Most of the competitors refrai ned fro m entering th e wood lots hot; those wh o didn 't were " bu rn ed." jeff Fredette was not o ne of those riders. Fred ette, who has ca p tured the overall awa~ six times in .th~ last !O years! dropped 14 points for a convmang WIn. AA rider Kevin Voll mar, tallied a score o f 23 to nail second pl ace. H e was followed by Brian Lo h man with 26, and overall A rider, Steve Nard. Nard dropped 'l:l points. Ro u ndi ng out the top five was Pa trick Waldie with 31 points. The 200cc A class win ner was Steve Vollmar, who just missed being in th e top five by posting a 32. Overall B honors went to Bill y Froman, whose score of M was good for seventh overall as well . Lewis stormed through a ll o f his preliminary races and ca p tu red th e wins in both th e 125 and 250cc Pro main events to score th e lion's share o f the $10,000 purse. Chris You ng and Lewis scored th e 125cc heat race wi ns , and had the first choices o f sw:ting positions at the sta n o f the 15-lap main. Tommy Clo wers blasted o ff the li ne wit h Pa t Gomm , Randy Moody and Greg Tierhei mer in ~ot p u rsu it. Lewis ga ted seventh, b ut me,,!odlcally picked off ride rs with each la p. LewIS closed to the rear o f Clowers' Kawasaki and waited for a n opening. On la p 10, Lewis squeezed by, only to have Clowers force h is way back into the lead . Lewis wou ld not be denied, however, and stormed past for good a few turns later. Clowers held on for second, ahead of Bu bba Eri ckson, Scott Myers and Moody. Michael Craig and Le wis smoked through th e 250cc heal races , bu t it was jeffrey Pesta na wh o had the quickest clutch hand at the start oft he.main. M~y, Lewis and Craig followed o n ly Inches behind, Moody stormed into the lead on lap four, but Lewis and Craig bounced past o n the nex t la p . O nce irno the top two positions. Lewis and Craig enga ged in a battle royale, The two ri.ders were never separated b y more than a bike length, as Craig tried every trick in th e book to get pas t Lewis. Lewis held his lines, though, and scored his second wi n o f the nigh t. Craig was forced to sell ie for second, ahead of Moody and You ng. l:" Unrestrained laughter.Hooting and hollering.
