Surratt used the power of h is 250cc H o nda to sh oot by Lawrence for the lead. ·which he maintained to the finish . Manley char ged near the end of th e race and passed Lawren ce o n th e final lap to claim second. Lawrence was third ahead or Beier a nd Gary Sernics. Anthony Amarad io led th e ope n ing lap o f moto two as Manley. Surratt. Lawrence and Beier filed in beh ind. On lap two Manley and Surra tt moved 10 first and seco nd. respectively. as Amaradio dropped off the pace to an event ua l eigh th- pl ace fin ish . CA. ocr. 27 In a pr e-baj a 1000 tuneup. La rry Roeseler came out and smo ked the regulars at the 100s M.e. Best o f the West Ch ampionship Hare and H ound, held in J oh nson Vall ey. Four hours o f rain o n Saturday nigh t and ' a stro ng. co ld wind made for great racing weather . and 338 riders came o ut to try tOC3tch the H ar e. The Hare was 125cc National Hare 8c Hound Champion Jeff Capt, who .was able to keep his IO-minute head start at the end of the first loop. At the head of the pa ck on th e loop was Ted Hunnicutt and Larry Roeseler who took turns leading. In the first 10 miles of the technical ·seco nd loo p . Roeseler pulJed a five minute lead on Hunnicutt and slashed the H are's lead to four min utes. As the race progressed. Capt's 125 was slowl y being reeled in by Roeseler's 500. Finally, within two miles of th e finish, Roeseler caught and passed Capt. Hunnicutt continued his pace · to finis h second overall , followed closely by KTM's J im my Lewis. who was first 25Occ.
