Bill y j oe Mercier led th e first six laps of th e 10 lap opening m ota . Mercier opened a lead over th e in tense bat tle bet ween Peak/Pro Circuit Honda team mates j erem y MaGrath and Buddy Ant unez. while Su rratt tried to wor k u p fro m a fall early in the moto. By th e half way mark Antunez had crashed to th e hac k of the pack while Surrall worked into th ird be hi nd McGrath. During th e closing laps, Surratt p assed both McGrath a nd Mr rcier th en stormed awa y for an impressive victo ry. McG rath passed Mercier late in th e mo ta to finis h second while Antunez worked h is way back to fourth behind Mercier by th e end of th e race. . Mercier pulled anoth er holeshot at the start of th e second malO, but thi s time Surratt stormed pa st him by the end of the first lap. McG rath a nd An tunez wer e figh ting for pos ition and together dr opped Mercier to fourth on the next lap. McG rath opened a sma ll adva ntage on Antunez, wh o turn ed up the wick and stormed to the rear fender of th e 125c c Western R eg ional Sup ercross Champion. SUITall seemed to be in a race o[ h is own o u t fro n t as McGrath wa s surprised by Antunez. whe n he jum ped inside over a stepu p table top area. Antunez held tough the remainder o f th e mota and fin ished second behind SurratL McGrath fi nis hed th ird, a great distance in fro nt of Willy Musgr ave, wh o had pa ssed Mercier in the final laps of th e race for fourth place. . Bret Mi lan won th e first 250cc Begi n ner mota wi th a 15-second lead after Nate 0110 cra shed to the back of th e pack. Beau Gasin ski worked up to second to finis h in fro nt of Mike Wagner. 0110 was unstoppable in the second mo to and led it wire to wire.
