O'Mara puts on ashow at Perris Motocross By T o n y Alessi PERRIS, CA, ocr. 13 oh nny "O'Show" O 'Mara came out of retirement to join 667 other entra nts at ro und two of the GFI Fall Series at Perri s Ra ceway. The 125cc National and Supercross Champi on dazzled th e crowd with hi s smooth riding style en ro ute to a pair of wir e-to-wire mot o victories in th e 250cc Pro class. O'Mar a grabbed the first rnoto on a bike he had o n ly ridden in practice. " I brok e this bike in today in practice," O'Mara said about th e new Kawasaki KX250. While O 'Mara led, Mike Ch amberlain and Brian Manley fou ght over second pl ace, wh ile Dam on Huffman was making ra pid progress toward the front (after a poor start). Manley made the move o n Ch amberlain th en closed to within fou r bik e lengths of O'Mara, but that's as close as he or anyo ne would get to the former cham p. O 'Mara rode practi cally flawlessly and pulled awa y late in the race for a co nvinci ng win. Huffman and Mike Young charged through the pack, passing Manley and Chamberlain late in the race for second and third , respe ctive ly. O 'Mara got ano ther perfect start in moto two. Mike Young pulled in beh ind O'Mara for second and he was followed by Chamberlain. O'Mara and Youn g left the p ack behind and O 'Mara rode u ltra-smooth to keep Young at bay during the early laps. O'Mara's stamina was superior late in the race as he pulled away for another convincing win. Young maintained second the remainder of the moto while Huffman, who started poorly once again, moved up to finish third. O 'Mara's back-to-back wins netted h im the lion's share of the GFI 200% Pro payback purse, and his only defeat of th e day came during the GFI arm . wrestling tournament when race promoter Goat Breker pro ved to be a . bit stro nger, topping O 'Mara and a number of other worthy chall engers. Erik Hilton led much of the first 125cc Pro moto, while 15-year-old Huffman charged up from a midpack start. Once Huffman reached the leader H ilt on, he turned up the wick, flew p~s t Hilton then ra n away for the easy J Win . Billy J oe Mercier led the o pen ing la ps of the second moto and was just beginning to pull away wh en h e suffered arm cramps. "M y arms pumped bad down the back straight, it' s the fastest I ever went," he explained. Huffman assu med the lead but was dogged up to the fin al lap by Race T ech rid er Man ley, wh o used much of the mo to pl otting a las t la p mo ve. Manley's plan paid off as he passed the teenager on the fin al lap and held on for the win. Huffman scored the overa ll win since Manley finished 10th in the first moto as a result of a cras h with Mercier. Bubba Erickson rode cons istently for second overa ll with Dana Wiggins doin g th e same for third. Crai g Decker dominated the Intermediate classes by to ppi ng both 125 and 250cc di visions. Donald Upton ga ve him a close race in the 250cc cla ss by winning th e fir st moto, but Decker came back to win the a ll-important second moto and score the overa ll win. Decker and Mike Metzger had the closest battle of the da y in the first 125cc Intermediate mot o with Metzger edging out Decker by less than a whe el length as they beat th e rest of th e field by more than a half a trac k. Decker came back in the second mot o to score the moto and overall win over Metzger and Danny Seyler. C'( Resu lts FIRST TIMERS: I. Marques Doyle (Ya m ); 2. Caleb Woodard (Yam); 3. Sober PERRIS, CA, ocr. 1 3 hris Werner, a l4- year-old Hesperia hi gh school student, won the 1991 United Sta tes Junior Speedway titl e, wh en he o u tga red and ou tro de a field of 12 First Division Junior riders at Lake Perris Speedway. The race was part of the La ke Perris Far mer Fai r, wh ich is held each year adjace nt to the speedway track. The Junior' Nati onal is set up in classic cha mp ionsh ip-style format with each rid er participating in five individual heat s that score three points for a win, two for second place, one for third and a zero for last. The highest score at the end of th e event is the winner. The opening rid e of round o ne saw the 1990 Junior National ruriner-up Heath Hammonds scor e an easy win over Allen Kraus e and Matt Becker . Chris Wern er scored the win and three points in the second heat, besting Aaron Matteson. The third and final heat of the round -was dominated by l l -year-old Stephen Downing. Round two opened wit h W~rner, once aga in, going wire to wire for another th ree points, maintaining his perfect score a t the expe nse of Ryan Matteson and Becker. Danny Bandfield was eliminated from co mpe titio n after damaging his hand against the bac k straigh t cras h wall in lap four. The second heat of ro und two was wo n by Step hen Do wn in g, who out- . distanced Krause and Michael H ul l. Hammonds, on ce again, do mina ted hi s heat, taking the checkered flag ahead of Travis McDonald and Aaron Matteson . After two ro unds of action three riders ....:. Werner, Hammonds and Downing - were all tied at the top with per fect six point scores: McDonald and Krause were tied for fourth place wi th four points each . The ope ning heat of third rourid ac tio n pitted Downing and H ammonds .against each other. Wh en th e starti ng ta pes went up Hammonds was th e first to react. Do wn th e ba ck straigh t Downing edged o u t Hammo nds and assu med th e lead . Downing C kept the fro n t posi tion all the way to the checkered flag, while Hammonds came up a few yards short of the finis h line and ended up on the infield and in last place. Mc Donald finished seocnd for the third straight race and third went to Becker. The second heat of ro und three fou nd two bro thers facin g each o ther for the first and only time of the day. Ryan Matteson lined up in the o utside starting position wit h his twin Aaron Matt eson next to him. Aaron got the start and, after a brief duel with polesitter Michael Hull, took over the lead for good. Ryan managed to work his way by Hull as well but couldn't make . up any ground o n Aaron. The fina l heat of the middle round was , once again, the property of Chris Werner, as he took an earl y lead and coas ted to another three points. Larry Heseman was second. Michael H ull found th e opening heat of round four to hi s liking as he posted h is only win of the day . Hull , who started from gate three, bested Heseman and Krause in a three rider hea t. T he heat that all the scorekeepers had their eye o n from the begi nning was heat two of the fourth round. Starting in gate three was Werner and ou tside of him, due to the luck of the draw, was Steven Downing. Both had a perfe ct score up until this race. Werner got the jump a t the starting line and assumed an early lead , whi le Downing was trailing o n the outside line. Downing drov e too hard into the first turn and had trouble con tro lling the bik e as he exited turn two. As Werner mad e his way toward turn three Downing glanced off the crash wa ll and slightly out of control, drove hard after Wern er. As Downing entered turn three his loss o f control and excessive speed caught up wit h him and he la id the bike down in turn three ju st in ch es behind th e sidewa ys Werner. Since Downing was the only rid er down, there was no red flag and no restart, all he cou ld do was watch th e race from the infi eld. Hammonds go t back on the winning side of things in the next heat , taking th e win over Ryan Matteson, McDona ld and Amb er Kossuth. As the final round approached, Wern er was finally alon e at th e top with 12 p oints. Hammonds and Downing were tied for second with nine points each . Aaron Matteson , making a fin e showing, trailed them by only o ne point with ci~l. . . The final round began with Downing showing he was down but not ou t as he, once again, mad e th e o utside li ne work, posting the win over Ryan Matteson. T he second-to -last regularly schedu led heat was won by Aaron Matt eson, who despite starting on the po le, had to work pa st a very determined northern California rider named Travis McDo nald. The fina l race of the event was also the last chance for anyone to beat Werner. Hammonds and Dow ni ng still had a shot at the title if Werner could be kept silent in this last h eat. Hammonds rebounded from his earlier disappointments and immedia tely went to work on the rider with the perfect score. Hammonds, starting from the th ird slot, with Wern er to the . o u tside of him, was guessing perfectly with referee Jim Fishback and was the first rider to reach the first tu rn. Hammonds had Werner in his pocket ' by the end .of one lap and never gave him any daylight to move to the front, Hammonds won the heat but with Werner finishing second the championshi p was h is with 14 points. Downing and Hamm onds finish ed tied for second with 12 points and so were involved in a four lap run-off to
