Klamick cruises at Glen Helen Old Timers two-day Motocross By Sheila Kaynein SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 1 9·20 Fred Klam ick co m pe ted in four moLOS, holeshotin~ two o f th em , to wi n a ll four motos in the NOVIce Div ision Two class and run up the best score o f th e Old Timers MX twoday motocross ex tra vaga nza a t Gl en Helen . In the fir st Novice divison o ne moto, Klamick grabbed a han dful of throttle and rock eted through th e first tum wi th Ken Williams a short distance behind him, as were Steve Pobj oy, Gary Brick and Frank Derb y. As Klamick ca me in to sight from the Canyon sectio n , \Villiams was nowwhere to be seen , Brick wa s the second rider to co me into sigh t with Popjoy glued to his rear fender. Another lap and th e lead trio was equally sp read out, but Derb y was losing gr ound fast. And behi nd Derb y were Bill Misener and Barry Sim on wh o was recovering from a first tum spill . At the midway point, Misener had closed on Pobj oy alter getting by Williams and was abo ut to make a pas s attempt when a bobble cost him a co u p le of positions and Simon took over th e number four slot . As the race carn e to a close Brick loo ked back and realizing he was clear of the pack, backed off th e pa ce and cruised home th e winner. Brick held onto his lead for runnerup honors, while Pobjoy finis hed third, ( Simon fo urth and John Flanders in filth. Mot o two saw Simon keep th e rubber side down and fight for the holesh ot wit h Klam ick all the way down into tu rn two, where Klamick edged Simo n out for the lead . Simon was determined to sta y with th e leader, but a few err ors on th e first lap dropped h im off Klamic k' s pa ce. Misener was smooth and steady , as he moved into third an d closed on Simon. Pobj oy too , was on the gas and closing on Misen er as was Fla nders. It was in the heat o f battl e wh ere Pob joy pulled away fro m Fla nders as he cu t a path through the pack. Passing Misen er a nd then Simon, Pobjoy found hi mself in the n u mb er two slot, then he went in search o f Kla mick, who o nce again had left the pack behind. Brick moved up th e ranks and followed Pobjoy's tracks, passed Fla nders and then Simon. Misener too k advantage of a Simoni Fla nders du el and passed both of them in one .swoop to mov e into fourth. MOIO two came to an end with Klarnick o u t fro nt again followed by Pobjoy, Brick Misener and Simon. At the end of day one, it was Kla mick with two points, Pobjoy edging out Brick for second Simon was holding down Courth and nine points and Flanders breaking into the top five wi th I I points. • The first moto on day two saw Simon !;J3b the holeshot and lead u p to the Stadium rockers, w here Klam ick powered by for th e lead Pobjo y was running third Wtth Brick and Derby co mp leti ng th e top five. Pobj oy stud ied Simo n's lines for a lap and pounced, driving to me inside li ne in th e sweeper, ta ki ng over second. Brick sn uc k in behind th e pair, and, as Simon made his mo ve on Pobjoy, Brick went aro u nd both of them and in to second. A very su rprised Pob joy go t back o n th e gas and repassed Simon, but Brick had opened up a li ttle breathing room. Half a lap la ter Pobj oy closed the ga p and worked hIS way through th e Canyon doubles side by side wi th Brick holding onto secon d . As the moto wound down Klamick scored hi s third win of th e weekend, and Brick held on Cor second over Pobjoy . Simo n and Derby rounded out th e top five. Simon pulled another hol esh ot to start th e amick, Pob jo y fina l mot o o f th e da y with K1 and Bri ck in close co mpany. K1amick foll owed Simon into th e rock ers , changed lines a nd powered by for th e lead . Pobjoy followed suit in th e Canyon and took over second Sim on was next challenged by Mike Nich ols but this time hel d off the agl;ressor. Runn in g in filth but closing .q uick ly was Brick. Up at the front, Klam ick wa s enjoying a .comCortable lead with Pobj o y "ru n n ing a solitary second Simon, Nichol s a nd Brick co n tin ued to keep the mselves company for th e next co uple of laps and when th e checkered n ew the o rder remai ned intact, Wh en the four mot os were tall ied Klamick scored a very co nvinci ng overall with four points. Pobjo y fi nished second with 10, follo wed by Brick (12), Si mo n (16) and Derby. respectively . In d iviso n tw o No vice action Charles Wa tanabe carded a 2-1 o n Saturday, edgi ng o ut H ank Ow en . who had won th e ru st moto. Wendell Park put in a fine performance wi th a stro ng mo to two seco nd p lace showi ng for third overa ll. Rounding o u t th e top live were Richard Orrill, wi th a pa ir o f fo urths, a nd Jack Biery Sr. The action go t even mor e intense on Sunday wh en Park won the first moto foll ow ed by Owen , with Wanatabe taking th ird, as th e o vera ll would be decided in th e final mo to, When the 'ga te fell it wa s Park out o f th e ga te Cirst. Ow en, Watanabe, Orrill and Biery were clumped 'to geth er and jock eyin g for po sition. Park too k advantage of th e mass co n fus io n going o n beh ind him and opened up a sizabl e lead . By midrnoto the top three were Park, Owen and Watanabe, as th e pa ck sp read out behi nd The order remained th e same up CO th e white nag wh ere things go t crazy. With o nly a few co mers beh ind h im self and th e che ckered, Park 's fron t wh eel was he d o u t in a co mer a nd Ow en and Wa tanabe rode by almos t side by side. and then i t was a drag race as th ey ro u n ded th e last comer heading for the fin ish . Neither rider let 0 (( and Wata nabe. with the insi de lin e. elbo wed Ow en off hi s lin e and took th e checkered. This ga ve Watanabe th e da y's win as weII as th e class overalI for the week end. Ow en, wi th a pair of seco nds , cli nched seco nd o vera lI with Par k recoverin g to finish third in th e mota a nd overall positio n.
