th e Racin g En terprises·promoted Sa tu rday
MX at Carlsbad Racewa y.

Cost ello too k th e early lead in th e first mot o
a hea d o f Bill Mal on e andTom Eberl y. Ma lon e
held Co stello 's pace early, but seemed to have
diHiculty with th e, slippery co nditio n ns. A
miscu e o n Mall on e's pa rt allowed Eberly to
s li p b y. Mal one 's troubl es i n th e mud
con tin ued as Wayne Corne lius was also able
to ge t by. Eberl y looked lik e he mi ght have
the speed to challenge Co stello . but Coste llo
o nly got stron ger as the mot o wen t on.
Cos tello scored an easy wi n o ver Eberly,
Co rnelius, and Malon e.
H uge ruts greeted the riders in the second
molO, as the mud began 10 dry o u t. Co stello

slo w to gel up. bu t o nce he was up. moved
a t a tre mendous pa ce to wards the back of the
pa ck. [n two short laps Coste llo was cha lleng·
mg for the ,lead. Coste llo roa red past Eberl y
and sped away. Costello powered awa y from
th e pa ck a nd ca ug ht Gene Phelps, wh o was
cruisin g o ut in fro nt. Cqste llo blew past
Phel ps, and too k th e class win and first
overa ll.

More than 375 rid ers too k part in round two
o f the G FI North BailIe o f th e 90s at P ra irie
City . When th e da y's raci ng finall y came to
a close, Ka wasaki rider s Spud Wah ers and
Scon Myers were the big winners in th e 125
'lIld 250cc Pro dasses, respec tivel y.
Wahers won two hard·fou ght b.1 tlles in th e
125cc Pro dass and Myers foll owed suit in
the 250cc clas s. .seith er rid er had a n easy' tim e
o f it how ever , and the outcome: was in doubt
a ll th e way to the checkered flag.
The 250cc Pro s were up first , a nd, as th e
16 riders en tered th e first turn ir was Suzu k i ~
mounted G reg T irheimer in front, follo wed
by ~I yers, Todd Nel son and J eff Pestana. as
they made their way up the hifl. Myers wasted
litt le tim e movi ng aro u nd Ti rhe ime r a nd into
the lead. T ir heimer wasn't abo ut to ~i ve it
up easily , th ou gh . and sta yed right wnh th e

Meagher moving around Nelson o n the fina l

first mOlD Mea ghe r a nd T ir he im er were,
again. ba ttling for th e lead . It took almos t
a co mp lete la p befo re Meagh er grabbed th e
lead awa y from T irhei mer, a nd by th at tim e
five riders were in vol ved in a duel o ver first
p la·ce that wo uld last the en tire ma LO. On th e
eighth lap , Walt ers o u t·g uessed Meagh er and
shot into th e lead. Meagh er was u nable to pa ss
\Valters back a nd was for ced to sett le for
seco nd. Third wen t to Myers, fo u rt h to Nelson
and fifth to Bennell .
MOlO two saw Meagh er, agai n, co me o ut
of the first IUrn in the lead. T his tim e he was
followed by Dan ny Nelson a nd Walters. Agai n
th e racing was c1o::te, as the top three were
at times side by .side. At the ha lfway point,
Walters, who had worked hi s way arou nd

Meagher, wh o wo uld not let Walters get a way.
As th ey came off the big hill ~leaKher clo>ed
in o n th e IC"'.tder. Coming in 10 a tigh t righthand turn, it looked as if Meagher would
agai n tak e the lead , as he managed to get to
th e ins ide of Wa lters. Suddenly. Meag her 's
bike just sto p ped. Walters blew back in to the
lead , as Meagh er looked down at a brok en
cha in. From tha t poi n t it wa s a ll \Vah ers·.

The day started o u t easy enough for Stone,
as he ho lesho' the first l 25cc mota a nd simp ly
ticked o ff the laps as he put dista nce between
himself and second pl ace Joll y. The second
l25ec maLO a nd first 250cc mo ta wer~ repea t
performa nces, with Stone findin g no cha llen K fro m th e rest of the pack.

The second 250<:c mow was an other story.
J olly ripped a clean hol eshot and had Stone
a ll over the trac k lor three laps trying to find
a way pas t. On lap (uu r, SlOne go t hi s front
wh eel m side 01 Joll y's and Jo ll y went down
trying to cover hi s line. Wh en the dust cleared ,
Stone was a ll by himself in the lead, and after
seven laps he looked untouchable. But as he
look th e wh ite flag, SlOne noticed th e nut had
co me o ff of hi s swing arm bo lt , and the bo ll
was working its wa y o ut of th e right side of
th e bike. A few kicks with hi s boot had it
back in pl ace. but a j u mp lat er it was co m ing
out agatn. Fumbling wuh this was slow ing
him co nsiderably, and Jolly, not sure whal
was going on ahea d, waSgaining ground.
