Procida PA LMDAU , CA, ocr. 6 Jo n Ortner sto le the overa ll win in the Vet Expert class at the California Racing Club's Gremlin Gra nd Prix, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. O rtn er, aboard a Buffalo Brothers-backed Honda CR500, rode a near perfect race, but it wasn 't a ru naway. Ortner's Honda fired up with the lall 01 the nag. but he still wound up loll owi ng Scon Walker and Brad McLeod through the first turn. Walker had McLeod riding his shirttai ls, but within one lap, Ortner had motored by both McLeod and Walker. Jim Sendleb ack also made his way up through the ranks. Bob Maxwell sha dowed Sendleback, and the two went int o second and thi rd , respectivel y. Ortner was running with a clear tra ck, a nd built up a sizable lead. Sendleback had lall en back a bit a nd was now attem pting to close up the lost ground. Also on the ("Is was Ken Neitzel who was currently runmng in filth. behi nd McLeod. A lap later, Neitzel worked his way int o fourth a nd on the same lap slipped by Maxwell lor third. However. the heat was getting to Neitzel and he called it quits. McLeod reeled in Sendleback alte r disp lacing Maxwell, and with o n ly two laps rema in ing, found an inside line on th e motocross section of th e co urse. O rtner took a well deserved wi n , with McLeod on ly a short distance behi nd. Roun ding o ut the top live were Sendleback, Bob Tippelto n and J ay Irwin. In the lower Vet ran ks, action was every bit as exciti ng as in the Experts. Mark Duv al grabbed the hol eshot with Chri s Leiker a nd Charlie Strong making it interesting. Gene Dickins on and Ran dy Gill espie held down lou rth and filth , respectively. Dickinson began knockin g on Duval s' back door, and as th e pair returned from the bac k sectio n 01 the track the lead changed hands . With Dickin son now in the lead , Duval backed his pa ce down and was pa ssed b y Leik er and Reill y. Reill y proved to have laster lin es, and mo ved into second with two laps remai ni ng and lit the a fterburners in an attem p t to ca tch Dick inson. As th e pai r exited the last tum on th e MX section of the track. Reill y outpo wered Duval a nd took over the lead which he held to the lin ish.
