Hale struck ba ck three laps later, but it was Durelle wh o performe d the final d raf t pass to score th e win . Davi s greeted the chec kered flag th ird , while a distant Darl in g scored the fourth and final transfer to the main . In gram was fastest off the line in the second semi, and slid into the first turn with Ath ert on , Springsteen and Keith Day in tow. . Ath erton took co ntro l o n lap three by drafting into the lead as they ent ered turn one. Ingram maintained a comfortable second, while Day was abl e to f~nd hi s way past Springsteen o n lap Parker (I) grabbed the holeshot at the start of the 25-lap main event, ahead of Terry Poovey (18) and Chris Carr (20). Carr spe nt most of the Cha llenge in ast place, but ju st befo re the whi te flag e railed the o u tsides of three and fou r o find h im self in second. Poovey, owever, was not fond of Ca rr 's pass, nd in the final das h for the checkered ag dra fted past fo r second p lace. Carr ai ntai ned th ird , while Hale, Graham nd Morehead followed in that order. " I figured if I go t th e holeshot I cou ld win ," said Parker, no w 10,000 richer. "Everythi ng went like I wanted, I got out front and broke away for the win. I reall y wanted to beat Chris, th at way he'll be thinking before the main." Parker's win in the Camel Ch allen ge was his first of the seaso n , and he becam e the ninth d ifferent rider to score the first p lace chec k in 1991. Poo vey, Carr, Morehead and J o nes chas ed aft er the defending cha mp , but with li ttle su ccess. Parker began to open an immediate lead, whil e Carr struggled to get by Poovey. " I decided last week , that I was gonna drop the hammer right from th e start," said Parker. "Everybody knows that I'm not usually real hot at the start of a mil e race, so I wanna surp rise them ." Carr displaced Poovey o n lap two , but the T exan struc k back at the end of the next straigh t. " I don 't give a heck about the po ints chase, I want to win ," Poovey jo ked earlier. " Heck, I wanna screw it up !" Deter mined to keep h is cha mpionsh ip hopes a live, Carr repassed Poovey on lap four a nd began to close the gap o n Parker. Together, Parker, Carr and Poov ey bege n to distan ce themse lves from J o nes, Pegram and Farris , who argued over fourth . Parker and Carr set a blisteri ng pace that Poovey co uld o nly ma tch for five la p s before fadin g back. Jon es mom entaril y cha lleng ed Poo vey, but soo n began to work hi s way back in the pa ck. "One of the shoc ks went o ut in the heat race, and we didn't have the special tool to cha nge i t," sa id a disappo inted J ones. " We j us t rode with it, and the rear end wouldn 't hook up a t all." By lap 10, Park er an d Carr had carried thei r battl e to nearl y a fu ll straigh t ahead of the rest of the field. Pegram , Poovey and Farr is were joined by Hale, wh o had to overcome a bad start. Carr assumed the lead on lap 12, but Par ker stole it back on the following lap. T wo laps late r Carr again drafted pas t Parker as they exited turn four , but as expec ted, Parker snuck past on th e back straight. . " I was getting a feel for h im: ' said Carr.
