Durelle foll owed su it, and motored into seco nd, while Davi s al so looked for a wa y aro und Darling. Davi s cut under Darl in g a t the start o f the second lap, and set o u t aft er Durelle. Durelle, meanwhile, sha do wed Hale aro und the track and found his way past on la p six. Hale struck ba ck three laps later, but it was Durelle wh o performe d the final d raf t pass to score th e win . Davi s greeted the chec kered flag th ird , while a distant Darl in g scored the fourth and final transfer to the main . In gram was fastest off the line in the second semi, and slid into the first turn with Ath ert on , Springsteen and Keith Day in tow. . Ath erton took co ntro l o n lap three by drafting into the lead as they ent ered turn one. Ingram maintained a comfortable second, while Day was abl e to f~nd hi s way past Springsteen o n lap Parker (I) grabbed the holeshot at the start of the 25-lap main event, ahead of Terry Poovey (18) and Chris Carr (20). Rodney Farris (92)~ Larry Pegram (72) and Poovey (18) swapped positions throughout the main event. Farris finished third. S IX . Junior Invitational Mich ael Dill on, Allon McBee and Paul Polhemus topped the th ree sixap Junior hea ts, and were jo ined o n he front ro w by runners-up Cory Perrault, Robert Laud and T im Selb y. Dillon succeeded in taking the lead n th e third lap, but McBee sto rmed ack int o th e lead o n the foll owing ircuit, and began to pull away. Dillon dropped from the race o n th e hi te flag lap with a blown mot or, nd McBee scored th e win with room o spare. Steve Ma yfield and Dale ennema n ro unded o ut the top three. " Whe n Dill on passed me, it j us t umped me up ha rder, and I dr opped h e hammer: ' said a happy McBee. Camel Challenge Parker chose to start th e five-lap mel Challenge race from th e inside le, and proved to have the fastest eflexes at th e flash o f the gr een light. ha sing Parker through the first turn . n clo se formation were Poovey, H al e, rr , Moreh ead and Graham . H ale and Parker excha ng ed the ead th ree times over th e next two lap s, ut Hale slipped off the groove and ropped to fourth . After the dem ise of ale, Parker rode to the win wit h a o mforta ble margin of victory. Carr spe nt most of the Cha llenge in ast place, but ju st befo re the whi te flag e railed the o u tsides of three and fou r o find h im self in second. Poovey, owever, was not fond of Ca rr 's pass, nd in the final das h for the checkered ag dra fted past fo r second p lace. Carr ai ntai ned th ird , while Hale, Graham nd Morehead followed in that order. " I figured if I go t th e holeshot I cou ld win ," said Parker, no w 10,000 richer. "Everythi ng went like I wanted, I got out front and broke away for the win. I reall y wanted to beat Chris, th at way he'll be thinking before the main." Parker's win in the Camel Ch allen ge was his first of the seaso n , and he becam e the ninth d ifferent rider to score the first p lace chec k in 1991. National Par ker stormed off the lin e from th e ou tside p o le to lea d the Roll in g T hu nd er Show int o turn one at the start of the 25-lap main event. Poo vey, Carr, Morehead and J o nes chas ed aft er the defending cha mp , but with li ttle su ccess. Parker began to open an immediate lead, whil e Carr struggled to get by Poovey. " I decided last week , that I was gonna drop the hammer right from th e start," said Parker. "Everybody knows that I'm not usually real hot at the start of a mil e race, so I wanna surp rise them ." Carr displaced Poovey o n lap two , but the T exan struc k back at the end of the next straigh t. " I don 't give a heck about the po ints chase, I want to win ," Poovey jo ked earlier. " Heck, I wanna screw it up !" Deter mined to keep h is cha mpionsh ip hopes a live, Carr repassed Poovey on lap four a nd began to close the gap o n Parker. Together, Parker, Carr and Poov ey bege n to distan ce themse lves from J o nes, Pegram and Farris , who argued over fourth . Parker and Carr set a blisteri ng pace that Poovey co uld o nly ma tch for five la p s before fadin g back. Jon es mom entaril y cha lleng ed Poo vey, but soo n began to work hi s way back in the pa ck. "One of the shoc ks went o ut in the heat race, and we didn't have the special tool to cha nge i t," sa id a disappo inted J ones. " We j us t rode with it, and the rear end wouldn 't hook up a t all." By lap 10, Park er an d Carr had carried thei r battl e to nearl y a fu ll straigh t ahead of the rest of the field. Pegram , Poovey and Farr is were joined by Hale, wh o had to overcome a bad start. Carr assumed the lead on lap 12, but Par ker stole it back on the following lap. T wo laps late r Carr again drafted pas t Parker as they exited turn four , but as expec ted, Parker snuck past on th e back straight. . " I was getting a feel for h im: ' said Carr. "I was seein g if I co uld get by him at the line, so I'd kn ow wha t to do o n the last lap ." ·As th e la p s wound down , Ca rr seemed co nt ent to sha do w Parker around th e course until the last lap.
