In molO on e of th e 250ec A class. Mark Musselm an slOle the lead . with Steel sixth o ff the sta rt . Steel pushed b y rid ers to work his way in to fourth and begi n to pressure Chris Knox. Steel rode on th e rear fender of Knox's mach in e for severa l laps before ge lli ng by.· Chuck Reed held do wn second. and Mu sselman still controlled the lead . Reed bega n 10 slo w. as Steel reeled him in. Both riders closed th e gap o n Mu sselman . an d Steel fin all y too k o ver second. Mu sselm an ha d a seven -second lead over Steel. but by the fina l lap Steel had closed lhe dista nce. T im e ran o ut.. however , and Mus~lman landed lhe first mOlO wi n. In moto two. In the fir st 125cc Ex per t moto, Ton y Lorusso roos ted away with th e hol esh ol a nd steadily pulled a way fro m th e pack. By midmoto. Lorusso had an imp ressive lead over Will iam Dzielak, wh o was holdin g down second. Dzielak m isca lcul ated a lurn and wen t down. allowing Pat Barton and T readwell to sli p by. Barton an d Treadwell battled for severa l laps. until Barton blazed by T readwell o n lh e inside o r th e lu rn. Ca ner. wh o was o n ly secorids behind, wasled no ti me in reeli ng in T readwell a nd setti ng hi s sigh Is o n Bart on. After severa l laps of followin g Barton. Carter rock eted by him o n th e back downhill a nd held o n for second. Barton too k th ird , while Dzie1ak go t back on patt and passed Treadwell with o nly a few la ps rerna im ng for fourth. In molO two , it was all Carter. The 17-yearo ld rode a nawl ess ratt. an d scored th e wi n wi th ease. Treadwell tried every trick in th e book, but co uld not !!let by Mikal son . With o nly a few lap s rernai m ng. Mikal son 's Honda siezed and T readwell was abl e to cruise by. In the second mot o, Lo russo was firsl o ut o f the ga te and led the pack into the woods section. But as th e pa ck came back into view, it was Kurt McM ill en leading. McMillen began in creasing his lead and loo ked as if he had th e win in the bag. 33
