Sassaman hot at Pine Grove ST By Len Bre ech PINE GROVE, PA, SEPT. \·2 Eric Sassaman dominated th e pr oceedings as the Flying Dut chmen M.e. closed o u t thei r '91 season with th e traditional Labor Day weekend short tr a ck . Sassaman h a d an exce llent battle on Sunday to tak e th e 250cc A win , and easily won the newly added DTX A class. After battling T om and Rob Maj eski for a few laps, Sassa man took th e lead in th e Open A main, only to fall severa l laps la ter and give the win to Rob Maj eski. In the 250cc A main, Mik e Hacker jumped o u t in front o f Randy Sh ank, Kevin Varnes, Ken Yoder and Sassa ma n. Sassaman moved in to fourth by the end o f th e first lap, but 'stay ed th ere u n til th e fourth lap wh en Varnes fell. T he n Sassaman got by Sh ank for second, a n d pressu red H a ck er . H a ck er bobbled sligh tly, giv in!; Sassam an th e open ing he needed to put h ISPenn State Cycles-sponsored machine into the lead in th e thi rd turn. Once o u t fron t Sassaman was u nc halle nged. At th e waving of the gr een flag, Tom a nd Rob Majeski a nd Sassamam pulled in front o f Mike Klopp, Mi ke H acker and th e rest o f the Open A class . For th e first three laps, the front three swapped pl aces repeatedl y. After three laps, Sassaman took the lead and started to pull away from the Maj eskis. While it loo ked like he was pulling away, Sassaman fell in th e seco nd tu rn o n the sixth lap. Sassaman wa s caught under his ma chine for over a lap , giving th e win to Rob Maj eski. Jack Franklin won th e Open B final on Su nday, but he had to ear n tt, as he started fro m the pe nalty lin e after crashing on the openi ng lap. After a few ot her chances, Shawn Roth stein too k the lead from R ick Hawk, Todd T em ple and Frankli n. Hawk too k th e lead o n th e second lap , wh ile Fra nk lin shot into second on th e th ir d lap, and stole the lead on the fourth lap. Franklin shot away to an easy wi n. H oleshot Raceway. Siother took the lead a hea d o f Trevor Vine s, Mike Da mratoski and Chuck Nicholason at the start o f moto one. Vin es chased Siother throu~h lap five o f th e eig h t-lap moto, un til his bike screeched to a halt and sen t him sailing over th e bars. Damratoski inherited second, but Siother had alrea dy b uilt up an u n touch able 12-second lead. Vin es was back o n his bik e to began at th e start of mota two, but as in the firs t ou ti ng. it was Siother taking th e win. Damratoski mo tored in to second with Vin es and Nicholso n trailing. Vine s camped o n Damratoski' s rear wh eel fo r the first two lap s, as the two riders ran a tire -ta-tire ra ce for second. Vines cut to th e insid e of Damrat oski, but Damratoski refus ed to budge, and bo th riders found th em selves on th e f ound. While Siother co n tin ued to poun h is way around th e cou rse.
