; M GrGCRGSS Motocross des Nations e Holland's Gert-Jan Van Doo m (14) led the 500cc class ri ders throughout the final 5OO/25Occ mo to un til he was passed by Stanton on the final lap. " The U.S. team added an 11th plaque to the Peter Chamberlain Trophy. 10 double class win , which gave them eig h t po ints . The U.S. had n ine points and H olland dropped to third with 13. Two bad starts by Sweden 's l2Scc class rider Joakim Karlsson pu t the team out of co nte ntio n, a nd Britain was o u t of it after a cras h left Herring rid ing to the finish with a co ncussio n and Dobb raced from last a fter stop ping fo r clutch adjus tments. The possibili ties for the fin ale too k shape . If Stanton and Bradshaw both wo n th eir classes, ยท then America was home free. Bu t if Bervoets could repeat his 250cc victory in the fina l enco unte r, Belgium could not be beaten, provided Ge ukens finished' in the top four in the 500cc class . After one lap, the possibilities were th rown wide open. For the th ird time a Swede sto le the hol esho t as Hansson led the pack into turn one by two bike lengths . He led for five of the 14 lap s as the significant actio n took pl ace behind him. Brad sh aw co m p leted the first lap 10th and fou rth in the 250cc class, but Stanton was 21st. The Belgians fared even wors e, as Geukens and Bervoets were 2Sth and 26th. . " I sta rted third and fell, go t back up and fell again o n th e first lap," said Stanton. Bervoets related the sorry tale of th e Belgian Waterl oo. " Geukens wa s fifth and I was right behind him leading th e 250s, but he A determined look lingered on Stan ton's face as he stood atop the ros trum. Belgian Mamicq Bervoets won th e second 250/125cc moto, but a collision with teammate Dirk Geukens in the final 5OO/25Occ race ended Belgium's title hopes. went sideways and I hit him, " said Bervoets holding back the tears of di sappointment. " I wa s so happy wh en I made th e holeshot in th e class, and th en that happened. I cras hed aga in a few laps later, I was trying so hard to come back ." He wasn 't the only one. " At midrace I fell again af ter passin g Mal in, then I fell a fourth tim e after passing him aga in," said Sta nton. " I just kept going and go ing , tha t was all I co uld do. I didn 't kn ow wha t was goi ng o n." With Belgium and U.S. appeari ng to be out of the hunt, Holl and took over as the title candidates as Van Doorn moved past Hansso n for th e lead early in the race. H is teammate Evertsen, riding better and better as th e track got rougher, passed Bradshaw o n lap two and event ua lly mo ved to th ird on th e track and in the 250cc class behind Puzar and Veh konen. Both of th ose 2S0cc class riders had go ne pas t H ansson, Van Doorn and the o ther Occ SO fro nt-ru n ners. Dobb had also pa ssed Brad shaw for fourth in the 2S0cc class by lap five as Bradshaw struggl ed to overcome the second-ro w start. " I got a bad start from th e seco nd row, but I got a coup le of breaks on the opening lap wh en o ther riders fell ," said Bradshaw. " Some of the o ther 250s started on th e front row and they got awa y." DeCoster justified his decision to put Stanton on the front row, sayi ng, " I didn 't want to sacrifice Stanton's chances because we needed that win. Stanton proved that it is not so difficult to pass if you are good enough." And it all came down to Stanton, who was running fourth behind . Malin. If he fini shed there, it would lea ve th e U .S. one point behind Holland: Th en Stanton got past Malin, giving America th e edge based o n th e cla ss win tie-breaker. But two laps later, Van Doorn passed Occ Hansson for th e lead in the SO class and the U.S. needed ano ther point again. With th e 30 minutes nearly up, Stanton still couldn 't see the riders ah ead of him, bu t at the two-lap board he had Mortensen, third in the SOOcc class , and runner-up Hansson in sigh t. He passed them bo th and went into the fina l lap just a few feet beh ind Van Doo rn. "I didn't know where 1 was or what place I was in , but I cou ld see Bevo . (Fort i) and our guys at the edge of the track getting excited so I figured I was ca tch ing up," said Stanton. After being 38 seconds behind Van Doorn at the 20-minute mark, Stanton passed the Dut ch man on the final lap and crossed the finish line fifth overa ll but with th e SOOcc class win, four seco nds clear of class rival Van Doorn, w h o had become se pa ra ted from Stanton by Bradshaw. Four 2S0cc class riders crossed th e finish line ahead of Stant on . Puzar was th e first to rid e under the checkered flag, and Vehkonen foll owed him 16 seconds later. T en seconds later Evertsen finis h third with Dobb not far beh ind. Brad shaw fin ished sixt h over all and two seconds behind Stanton. Bervoets and Geukens were both still advancing up to th e end and they fini shed a few seconds apart in 10th and II th , respectively, behind a string of SOOs led by Van Doorn in seventh , Hansson and Mortensen . Their efforts gav e th e Bel g ia n team th e score necessary to tie Holl an d for second, and th e tie was broken with Belgium 's three class wins. Even in defeat, Belgian team manager Johnny Strijbos was chivalrous. " Of course I am disappointed to lose by so lit tle for th e seco nd time," he began. " My riders did their best and I co uldn 't ask them for more, bu t the Americans are still, in th is race, the lJ'l best." Results 5001125 MOT O t : l. J eff Stanton (Hon 500) USA; 2.
