Although Smail set a blisterin g p ace and succeeded in closin g on Huffman near the end of the mota , Huffman cruised across the fin ish li ne to score the mo ta wi n. Smail foll owed with a comforta ble lead on Ray, Canoy, Ray Crumb an d Sha ne Trittler, who worked up from a 12thplace start. Second was as far as T rittler wo u ld adva nce, as H uffman was long gone. H uffman greeted the checkered flag well ahea d of Trittler, Mercier , Crumb and Ray.' " Once 1 got out front , 1 felt pretty con fident ," said the 15-year -old H uffman. " I wanted to get int o the lead as soo n as possible, so 1 cou ld ride my own race. " Smail nab bed the hol eshot in the opening 250cc Pro mota , with Ryan Carlis le, Huffman , and Mike Cham ber la i n close beh in d. Sm a il took advan tage of the clear track ahead of him, and began to estab lish a lead that he wou ld ho ld throughou t the mota. H uffman dogged Carlisle for two laps before scoo ti ng past and taking over second.
