With II Supercross and two Nationa l wins th us far in the 1991 seaso n . the D707 has proven itself in the hands of Ameri ca 's fin est rid ers o n th e hard -surfaced tracks across the nation. Now the D707 is availab le to everyo ne, and for our evaluation we met up wit h Dunlop's Race Service Coordinator Frank Stacy at Carlsbad Raceway, infamous for its co ncre te-hard uphills. downhills and slippery turns. We tested the tire against Bridgestone's M22 on a new 1992 Honda CR250. wh ich comes stock with the Dunlop K695. an inte rmediate-terrain tir e. and Suzuki's '92 RM 125. O ur initia l impressions of th e D707 were that it felt little different than the M22. which we've become fam iliar wit h over the years . bu t as the tir e began to war m up and break i n. its good tra its really beg an to shine. The tire seems to find trac tion in slip pery corners. such as hard ground covered with a thin layer of dirt. Only an overa bundance of throttle mad e the D707 slide o ut to th e side. Our first thoughts were tha t the ti re was made of a softer compo und that wo uld gr ip better but wear poorl y, but Stacey informed us that in a d urometer rating. th e D707 is n o softer than th e com petitio n 's. T his became apparent sin ce the tire ha s held up q u ite well. Wi th over five rides on hard-packed tracks, th e D707 is j ust beginning .to sho w signs of seri ous wear. . The D707 is a di rectional tir e, whi ch mean s that it is designed to work best o nly when mounted in the speci fied dire ction. While this allowed Du nl op engineers to design specific accelerat ing and brak in g kn ob con fig ura tio ns. it prevents budget-conscious riders from turning it aro und in order to get the maximum amo un t of life ou t of the tire. Th e speciall y designe d brakin g edges make the D707 an excellen t stopper. Even under heavy brak ing situa tions. the D707 stays straight. witho ut slid ing from side to side or doin g an yth in g unexpected.
