Smith struggles to Bear Creek Speedway win By Kevin George ' S.CANTON, OH, AUG.31 Kalvi n Smith had a rough time scoring th e Handicap main even t win at Bear Creek Speedway. Sm ith failed to fini sh eith er of two heat ra ces befor e his Iuck changed in th e m ai n. In th e first heat race, Jeff Tretara pulled th e holeshot with Mark Maurer , Mik e Weaver, Kurt Cerwinsky and Smith followi ng in a tight gr oup. Cerwinsky go t a foot peg into Smith 's front spokes, and wen t down. Tretara led Maurer and Weaver to th e finish , while Smith was not co mpetitive. Wi th the spokes repaired, Sm i th showed u p for the second heat, A bent for k had go ne .undetected and o nce again Sm ith was an alsoran. Maurer got th e bestofTretara and Weaver nailed down another third. The Handicap ma in lined up with Cerwinsky starting scratch, Weaver from the 10 yard li ne, Smith o n the 30, Maurer on th e 40 and Tretara back at the 60. . Cerwinsky held on to the lead for a cou p le of laps, then Weaver led a co uple.
