~ LOCAL EVEN S T I Keith Sherman (66) led Jeff Van Camp (41), Jeffrey Horton (101), and Jack Phinn (33 ) as th ey blasted through Carl sbad Raceway's first turn. Ron Y~oto (97W) and Kirk Strong (26) negotiate me jump at Castle Rock IT. Yamamoto wi th Fay in tow, ha d worked their wa y up to secon d a nd third, respectivel y. Annen , H ia tt , Staley and Mar k Myers. In th e semi. it was Ann en. Waters and Bro wn taking tra nsfers to th e main. In the main event , Strong snatc hed the hol esho t, foHow ed by Sta nley , H yso n , Schn itze r, Yama mo to , Kel l, Fa y and th e o thers . Strong slowly increased hi s lead, wh ile Sta n ley, Schnitzer a nd KeH ra n ultra -close, Severa l la ps went by, then An ne n moved up to jo in the close ru n ni nf; trio. Coming over th e jump Kell pulled hIS han d off the bars and everyo ne though t he had in j ured th e hand, wh en in fac t his gas tank hold-do wn nut had co me off, a nd his ta nk was tryi ng to n y off. Kell was able to get the tan k back over the mo unti ng stud and never lost a spot. At th e finish it was Stro ng , Stan ley, Sch ni tzer, Kell , Annen, Yamamoto, Bro wn , H yso n and Kopp. In th e Pro-Am main event, Strode grabbed the hol esh ot fo llowed by Gerrish , Shane But char t, Je ff Anderson, Duncan , McP herson a nd th e -other Pro- Ams. McP herso n pa ssed Duncan a nd went after Anderson , wh o he fough t wit h for severa l la ps befor e ge ui ng by. Ge rris h went o u t wi th mechani cal probl em s just before severa l riders went dow n in th e sweepe r. The evening dew had sta rted to mak e the clay tra ck q ui te greasy, especially on the groove. A single field restart was necessary . bu t tha t barely went one lap before riders again began to go down , bnnging out the red nag. Once agai n , th e Pro-Ams were lined u p single file and Strode seized th e lead, follow ed close ly by Anderson and McPherson. McPherson pa ssed Anderson in turns one and two but o nce aga in so meo ne went down. It . was called a race and the finis h ing order reverted to Strode, An derson, McP herson , Butchart, Dean Au trey a nd Lynch. Res ults ,. Flemming flies at Royal Mountain Motocross By Tim Sell er CAROGA LAKE, NY, SEPT. 8 Do ug Flem m ing scor ed big at Royal Mountain MX Park by smoking to the Open and Plu s-25 Expert cla ss wins. Flemming rocketed into the lead and went unchallenged in both P lus 25 Expert class mOlOS. Brian Stickles was buried in mi d'pack both molOSand rode through for 3-2 fimshes to net seco nd overall. Jeff Alle n was a solid third with a pare of founhs. Bob Austins cha sed F1em min~ across the finis h line in moto o ne, but a fust lap misfonune had him last at the stan of mota two . Austin shredded through over 20 riders to seventh by the moto's end, an d founh overall. The Open Expen class was all Flem m in g's. Flemming performed wheelies and midair antics that impressed th e cro wd. In bo th mo tos John Yo ung, Mike Murray and Mike Doughmy trailed Flemmi ng. The 250cc Amateur class saw Nick Van Pra a g hol esh o t bo th motos. Van P raa g moun ted 10-15 secon d leads in bo th mot os. Jeff Ruga r had a dice wi th Dean Livermois and Ken Case in the second mota and the last lap had everyo ne confused about the overall. On the last la p, Case moved from fourth to second, Livernois did the opposite , and Ru ga r managed to hold th ird. After sorting the tall y, Van Praa g took the overall ahead of Rugar, Live rnois and Case. Schoolboy class actio n saw Tony Pavia roos t away to two mot o win s tha t kept his mom and dad ju m pi ng lor joy trac kside. Sha ne Docksta der a nd G reg Pru tehey waged war in th e race for seco nd an d traded th e pos ition repeatedly. Dockstader held seco nd when it counted and Frutch ey sett led for thi rd. In hea t o ne;Stro ng and Dave Anderson gm too jumpy and went to the back row. Speedy KeJl nabbed the holeshot , ah ead 01Troy Rose, J oe Kopp and Str on g. On lap three, Strong slipped pas t Kop p a nd a la p lat et he went under Rose wit h o nly KeJlleft. Strong slowly reeled in KeJl, but th e laps ran o ut wit h the checkered n ag go ing to KeH, ahead of Strong, Kop p , Rose and Anderson. In heat two, Stanley got the scratch and never looked back as he outdistanced a field co nsisting of Del Sch nitzer, Mike Sullivan , Ron Wat ers, Steve Liberty, Bria n Baldwi n a nd Pat Munyon . The 25-29 classes are designed for riders not yet o ld enough for th e Vet class, and usua lly draw a lar ge number of entrants . She rma n ho leshot moto one wi th Van Ca mp right behind and J ack Phin n holding third. Van Ca mp ma de an aggressive move on the first lap a nd took th e lead a way from Sher ma n . The two riders th en began to d ice, pulling away Iro m third-p lace Ph inn. Charging u p from a bad Slan was Mike Ko ger, who took third away fro m Phinn. Roger appeared to hav e the speed to catch the lead du o, but a mi d· moto cras h relega ted him to the rear of th e pack. Van Cam p claimed the wi n with Sherman second and Phinn a di stant third. Mot a two again saw She rma n lead the way wi th Van Camp and Brian Webber · close behind.
